Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

An Aside from Running ....

I talk about my daughter, Waverly, here often. I'm very proud of her. She's a sweetheart, has the admiration of many and is growing into a young lady every day.

She called last night to let me know that she had another 6 weeks of straight A's. All her Mom and I ask of her is to work hard in whatever she does. She's got the first night of Upward Basketball practice at our church tonight. They'll practice through mid-December, have a scrimmage game the weekend before the Holidays and then have eight weeks of games in January and February. It'll be her fourth season of basketball.

I tried coaching her the first year when she was in the second grade. She was the only second grader with the rest first graders and one kindergarten student. It was a challenge! Now I just referee and the biggest battle that I have to deal with is parents who like to harp about every call!

She got 6.3 miles in with her Mom Sunday afternoon while I was gone and will run a 5K this weekend in addition to the eight (8) that we have to do to get ready for January. She invited the kids from her class to come out on Saturday and a teacher that ran the Houston Press 5K and one of her classmates have already committed. A chip off the old block? Perhaps. It would just make her a fourth generation sports journalist/promoter/organizer/participant!

A couple of other thoughts:

+ Wow! Penn State one win away - on November 19th against Michigan State - from a BCS Bowl bid. It looks like the Fiesta Bowl against Oregon, but I'd rather see them in the Orange Bowl against Miami (Fla.)

+ How can Phil Garner NOT get the National League Manager of the Year? The Braves had much more talent. I supposed Garner got dinged for the 15-30 start. Hmmm ... he retired a long time ago. Besides ... I bet Garner never beat his wife!

+ I can forgive Bush for many things, but I think it is just wrong for Bush to give Muhammed Ali the Medal of Freedom just like I think the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 honored the wrong man in allowing Ali to light the torch.

+ HBU women's basketball team got off to a quick start Monday night in their home opener; however, they won't make a return trip to Sharp Gym until November 29th. I'm disappoined that my friend Shane Brown is no longer the head coach, but I'll support the girls and new head coach Todd Buchanan. However, I don't support Dr. Hodo and the administration in the decisions that led Brown to chose to leave to accept the No. 1 assistant's position at Colorado State.

Steve,

I have agreed to volunteer the Run The Woodlands 5K on Saturday morning (and may be doing it on a regular basis - fortunately/unfortunately).

I am a friend of Coach Brown's. I supported his program and his kids. They played hard and are good kids, for the most part.

HBU, despite what appearances it gives, doesn't truly care about at least one of its five athletic programs.

The administration gave $6,000 raises across the Board to all staff and professors, but didn't feel compelled to do the same to at least the women's basketball staff. I can't speak for anybody else.

When Brown was up for the Rice job, nobody from HBU tried to see what they might be able to do to keep him. He took over a first-year program and brought them to national prominence in five years, including two semifinal appearances.

But the bottom line is that Brown wasn't given a serious shake at a D1 head job even though he was an assistant at Rice before taking the HBU job. (The Oklahoma City coach had to take a NCAA DII HC job for this year when she couldn't land a D1.)

I will support the girls and the new coach, but the administration is paying lip service to its athletic commitment. They sent an academic advisor (nice guy) with the team to Jackson, TN, but once they made the Final Four, it was time for the higher ups to show. :)
