Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Back to the East Coast!

Yes, I made it here! And no, I didn't throw in the towel!

I landed at LaGuardia on Monday afternoon, visited some former co-workers on Long Island (in Melville and Rockville Centre) and then spent the evening catching up with a former co-worker in New Jersey. (I think it was close to Jaynesburg; somewhere off of exit 8A).

I then drove Tuesday morning to my grandparents in Tipton, Pennsylvania (walking distance from DelGrosso's Amusement Park). Gas is cheap here in central Pennsylvania off of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, $2.19! But, tolls are expensive! Wow!

$9 just to go over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. (It will be nothing to run across it on Sunday!) $3.15 to go from just west of the Goethels Bridge to exit 8A and then from exit 8A to exit 6, where you pick up the exit for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Then a rousing $13 to go all the way to the Bedford, Pa. exit where I exited to go north up US 99 through Altoona.

Folks, that's $25.15 in tolls! I will be going back to New York City via Interstate 80, which is to the north.

I went out to eat at lunchtime with my grandparents yesterday afternoon, came back to do some things online and then to go out and run at 3 p.m. I was so wiped out from the travel that I was in bed from 3 to 7 p.m. - aside from dinner at 5 p.m. - and then again from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. this morning. My grandparents are 82 and 80 - so it is always good to make it back and see them.

Their's no toll on Verrazano coming back into Brooklyn its a one way toll. It was only $8 last year :) Crossing back into NY from NJ I think the toll for the(GW, Goethals, Outerbridge) is $5? EZ Pass can take you through all the tolls from Boston to DC.

Have fun in the race on Sunday in my hometown. Best parts of race for me was crossing VZ Bridge, 4th Ave. Brooklyn, 1st Avenue off the Queensboro Bridge. Toughest was after thrill of 1st Ave. going up to the Bronx and in Central Park having nothing left. The long walk for your gear after the race is a killer:) If its warm drink at every table.

Have a good one. Don't expect to BQ its a tough course, maybe next race:)
