Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Chilly Hilly Vancouver Wednesday Run

Two days had passed without any running so it was time this evening, once the rains had stopped, to get outside and get in a good run.

I didn't really have an objective as far as time or distance, but just wanted to get out for awhile and feel good after doing the Little Rock Marathon three days before.

I went outside at about 10:20 p.m. Pacific time here in North Vancouver and I headed east from the hotel on some familiar streets. (And, yes, it was a little chilly out.)

As I started to climb a couple of blocks from Esplanade to 1st and then to 2nd and 3rd, I was starting to feel pretty good. So I got to the corner of 3rd and St. David's and figured I'd keep going up until I got to Keith St. From there, I went about three or four blocks to the east which brought me to Grand Avenue East.

I started to begin running up the hill and eventually went up about 11 blocks to 19th St. before deciding to turn to the west. I wanted to run back west to Lonsdale Avenue, which would then go straight down south to the hotel; however, as I looked down a dark and very steep hill (not being able to tell if there were any patches of black ice), I figured it was best to just reverse the route until I got back to Keith St. and St. David's. (From there, I'd keep going west to Lonsdale and then south to the hotel.) The other reason why I reversed it is because I could see where there was or wasn't slush on the road. (It had put a little snow on the ground in this part of the city earlier this morning.)

As I headed west, I also began to face a stiff headwind that weather.com said was flowing in at 25-30 mph from the WSW. It turned the 34 degrees temperature into what felt like 21.

All in all, I covered 5.52 miles in 1:04:02; however, a good bit of the first 2.9 miles included a net elevation gain of 440 feet. (This was steeper than Sunday in Little Rock in about the same amount of distance - from mile 13 marker to mile 16 - and what I found out is that I could have pushed this evening a bit harder going up the hill.) That measures a pace of 11:36 per mile, which isn't too shabby on that kind of hill.

I'll be getting more familiar with the hill in the remainder of the month of March.

You are like a running machine!

I can't get back that soon after a marathon.

Oh wait, you are younger than me - I hope...
