Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

11.2 HRB Miles!

What do you do when you haven't run all week? Just go out and do 11.2 miles - in the Texas humidity no less. (I never said anything about being the brighest bulb in the box.)

The damage was 11.2 miles in 1:53:01 - we walked some - with a very unflattering 40:07.39 for the loop around Memorial Park at the very end. Edwin Quarles, Joe Carey, Dave Smart and myself opted for the full 11.2 while Cassie Cowan and James David Dykas got in about 6 miles. But it was good to get everyone together and it was Joe's longest run since the marathon in January!

(Afternoon update: Oops! As I was getting a shower, I realized that there was somewhere I had the watch turned off. That mileage and time combination would have meant 10 minute miles. Not on this Saturday. No way!)

We started near the Swimming/Aquatic Center in Memorial Park, ran out Blossom to Jackson Hill and crossed over the bridge to loop that runs along Memorial Drive. We ran all the way down to Sabine, over to Allen Parkway and back to Shepherd before we went a bit on Memorial, turning right on Sandman and going back to Blossom. Once we got back to the Aquatic Center, we added a loop around the Park for 11.2 miles.

Bill Cox and Steve Bezner were out on the west side of town with the Striders, Erica Smith and June Vidrine were out on their own this morning and we caught up with Erin Nies on Crestwood and in front of the Swimming/Aquatic Center. Barbara Boone was back out running this morning as she continues her recuperation from pneumonia and somewhere in Florida, Keith Kelleher is knocking out another 6 miles today. (And Erin Foley in Indiana!)

Anytime you run near or around Memorial Park, one is bound to see tons of people in the running community - as well as Kenyan Way fliers on car windows. The scorecard today was as follows:

+ Luis Armenteros (where I always see him ... running along Allen Parkway)
+ HARRA VP/Clubs Roger Boak (on the Memorial Park loop)
+ BCRR's Becky Spaulding (down near Sabine and Allen Parkway, causing Dave Smart to comment that I had my own fan club. Not!)
+ HMSA's Gerardo Mora (on the Memorial Park loop)
+ Houston Striders' Carlos Camacho (running on the loop) as well as Noah Matthews and Teresa Drago, who I had a chance to visit with after my run.
+ Terlingua Track Club's Christie Lammers (just one of the best female masters runners in town)

There were a few other folks that I know that I recognize, but I just can't put a name to them.

Dave had to head straight back to The Woodlands for a family outing while Joe, Edwin and I had breakfast at the Pig Stand on Washington Drive.

Well, sorry my plans fell through at the last minute. Wish I could have made it out to see all of you. There will definitely be another time.
