Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

BMI Cross Country 3-Mile Race Report

Friday nights under the lights at Bear Branch Sports Park in The Woodlands this evening found there to be the 1st Annual BMI Cross Country Run. It followed the "Friday Night Lights" Cross Country Invitational that was hosted by The Woodlands High School Cross Country team. It was a flat, multi-loop course on grass!

It was nowhere near as tough as the HARRA Cross Country Relay course, but it was something different, a 10 p.m. race start and all for a good cause!

How did I run after not having worked out at all since last Sunday - and not running since Run The Woodlands 5K last Saturday? 30:47.66 for 3 miles. Not sterling, but again, it is what it is. And, the bottom line is that I had a great time around friends!

The course was almost a four-loop course and was modified slightly from the 2.75 miles that the high school boys ran. The first loop, I passed by the clock at the finish line in just over 4 minutes. I felt good, but I knew I was going a bit too fast.

When I passed the clock a second time, as we had added some distance in the second loop, the clock read 12 minutes and change. So about 8 minutes. The third loop, which was the same distance as the second, was exactly the same -- in the 8-minute range (20-something). But the fourth loop is where I slowed some, I passed the clock for the last time in 28-and-change; however, there was a soccer field that we didn't go out and circle so I slowed down some.

My immediate, short term goal is to get my activity and exercise level back to where it was before I head back to Vancouver, British Columbia on Sunday night, September 10th.

And who was the first person that I saw when I got there? "Blogger Bill" Dwyer! I noticed that he had a race packet in his hands. Guess what? He had a bib # on (#44) and was going to pace one of his Ten For Texas runners. He said, "Oh, I'm probably going to run about 40 minutes." Bill's been doing a heckuva of a job building up a little bit of a consistent base in his mileage -- and it showed tonight.

About three minutes behind me was Bill -- finishing in under 34 minutes! As he said, the comeback has begun! (Bill, job well done!)

He and Debbie Tripp will be out there at 5-something in the morning with their groups of runners getting them ready for Ten For Texas, coming up on October 14th in The Woodlands, and the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco.

As always, lots of people to see and talk to --

+ Luke's Locker vice president Mike Lucas, The Woodlands store manager Susie Schreiber and her husband, Brad.
+ Dave Gentry, Stephen Smith, Debbie Tripp, Dominic Lanzilotti and Mark Whittemore -- all members of The Woodlands Running Club.
+ I saw "Sully", John Sullivan, out there but I didn't get a chance to talk to him as well as The Woodlands High School cross country coach Dan Green - and, of course, the 1972 Houston Marathon winner.
+ Houston Running Bloggers member Dave Smart and his son, Benjamin.

This was a nice, different, fun event that went under the radar of most of the runners in the greater Houston area.
