Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sneak Peek at Houston Marathon Finisher's Items

Want to see the finisher's shirt and the medal that you'll be receiving when you cross the Chevron Houston Marathon finish line?

Thanks to the heads-up from former HARRA VP, Communications Doug Spence, he pointed out that Channel 11, KHOU-TV did this story on Marine Corps Cpt. Karl Klicker, who will be running his 10th Houston Marathon at Camp Fallujah in Iraq.

The video can be seen at this link, while the story on Channel 11's web site can be seen here.

Klicker, who lost a comfortable employee-training position at Enron with a six-figure salary and rejoined the Marine Corps at age 50 reported the New York Times last year, was the fastest Masters runner at the 5K held in conjunction with the Huntsville Half Marathon in 2000 with a time of 21:19.

Klicker's marathon history since 2001 according to marathonguide.com is as follows:

2001 (Jan. 4) - 4:01:34 -- Houston Marathon, age 45
2001 (Nov. 24) - 4:07:14 -- Mississippi Coast Marathon, age 46
2002 (Jan. 20) - 3:55:47 -- Houston Marathon, age 46
2003 (Jan. 19) - 4:14:55 -- Houston Marathon, age 47
2004 (Jan. 18) - 3:49:36 -- Houston Marathon, age 48
2004 (Apr. 24) - 3:57:30 -- Country Music Marathon, age 49
2004 (Oct. 31) - 4:00:51 -- Marine Corps Marathon, age 49
2005 (Jan. 16) - 3:57:04 -- Houston Marathon, age 49
2005 (Oct. 30) - 4:20:44 -- Marine Corps Marathon, age 50
2006 (Mar. 19) - 3:47:05 -- Shamrock Sportsfest Marathon, age 50

Klicker's last marathon was held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which is where his race result reported that he lived. Klicker lived in Friendswood prior to moving to Cypress during 2001.
