Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Tuesday from Laramie via Cheyenne (NRC)

On the ultrarunning list serve that I'm on, NUC means "no ultra content".

Well, NRC here now means "no running content". That way, if you don't want to read, you can more easily bypass it. Who said I'm not out here to please. :)

I just received an odd look from the hotel desk clerk when I asked for a 2:30 a.m. wake-up call so that I could leave the hotel by 3 a.m. Even after I explained that I was running a half marathon in Lander, which is about a three-hour drive, I still don't think it registered.

We drove to Cheyenne this morning, stopped and picked up some travel materials once we got across the Colorado-Wyoming border then proceeded to go into town.

We went and visited the Historic Governor's Mansion. (We had been through here about three to four years ago and had seen the state capitol building.) I left the car parked close and we walked down (about six streets) to "downtown Cheyenne" and walked around the Historic Cheyenne Depot Museum.

The town is all getting ready for Cheyenne's Frontier Days, which will be at the end of July for 10 days. Some of the talent coming in includes Bon Jovi, Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, Neal McCoy, Ronnie Milsap, Los Lonely Boys, Def Leppard, Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy and Gretchen Wilson.

After taking in Cheyenne, we drove west on Interstate 80 to Laramie where we are staying tonight.

Before we got to Cheyenne, we pulled off the Interstate at the highest point on Interstate 80 (which was at about 8,640 feet above sea level) where the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Monument is at. Interstate 80 was originally known as the Lincoln Highway as it became the first major coast-to-coast highway.

Once we got to Laramie, we went to the Wyoming Territorial Prison, which was an exit away from where the hotel is. Waverly and I both found it pretty interesting.

After we checked into our room, we went into downtown Laramie, found a local restaruant called the Altitude Chophouse and Brewery and got dinner.

At the hotel, I pulled out the local directory and was looking for Italian. And it was basically a list of pizza places!

Anyway, the atmosphere and the food was great. It wasn't a high-end steakhouse nor was it an upscale Benigan's, but it fell somewhere in between with an interesting menu. I had the chicken alfredo calzone - and I hope that I'm not still full in the morning.

Hopefully all goes well tomorrow to get state No. 16 of half marathons.

For those of you racing tomorrow, have a great race and have fun with family and friends on our Nation's birthday!
