Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sunday Meanderings

My world seems so busy sometimes, but I'm really not as busy as it might seem. :)

I logged an hour Saturday night on the stationery bike and added an hour on the treadmill (4.4 mph) this morning. Waverly went with me this morning and did 30 minutes on the treadmill and recumbent bike each. [Not sure yet what I have on tap for the next two days. It looks like Wednesday and Thursday that I'll probably be in Jackson, Mississippi.]

On the way home from The Woodlands Running Club membership meeting earlier this afternoon, I had a call from Waverly. (She's at the Tim McGraw concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion in The Woodlands this evening.) She's backstage at the pre-party! [My sister has seen Tim McGraw play in about as many different states as I've run marathons in. Yes, she's a member of his fan club, has met Tim a couple of times and knows his band members and the bus driver on a first-name basis.]

Speaking of the TWRC meeting this afternoon, there were a LOT of people there at Creekside Park! Bill might correct me otherwise, but I'd venture to say that there was between 75 and 100 people in attendance.

Tony Allison; Kerri and Buck Snyder; David and Jeannette Wadsworth; Debbie Tripp; Rob Tripp; Pam Meaux; Bill Dwyer; William Banes, Misty Baugh; Vivian Corless; Greg and Gena Alvarez; George Roffe; Les Ellsworth; Alana Rose-Lynes; Jana Jordan; Vincent Attannucci and two of his sons; Mike Mendeck; Ron Longtin; Mary Kerschbaum; Stephen Smith; Nancy Prejean and her husband; Patrick Morein; Juan Flores; Doug and Paula Stiles; Don Cole; Skip Moschell; Dan Green; Michael and Kristin Collins; Nora Wilson; Lynnor Matheny; Russell Meyer; Ann Leoni; Carlos Ortegon; Bill and Dana-Sue Crews; Dick Esselborn; Jo Ann Blakeley; Leslie Hajdo; Tom Battle; Richard McQuaide ... that's 48 not counting me off the top of my head.

Ian McDougal; Bill Adam; Najet Shayib; Mark Cahill; Tammy and Audry Manchester; Kevin and Kelly Golden; Mike and Lisa Csikos; Vera Heg; Molly Field; Kim Rawls; Randy Bradley; Russell McCoy; Sharon Griggs; Valerie Lowe; Wayne Hudson; Jim Klein ... and 19 more from Bill makes 67.

There's really some critical mass growing here. It's pretty exciting. [Those of you who read the blog, please help me fill in the gaps.]

The start of a busy June for Waverly is already underway. She has school tomorrow and Tuesday, then she's done. She has volleyball camp from Wednesday to Saturday.

Next week, on the 12th, she goes to Pennsylvania with my parents to see her great-grandparents and returns on the 19th. Then with a day of rest, she and I depart for California for a week's vacation.

And I've got a bunch of writing to do:

+ Tuesday's running column in the Courier of Montgomery County
+ July column for Runner Triathlete News
+ Begin the editing process for HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running for the July/August issue

Bill will bust up laughing. I had thought about going over to run the Loop 30K in Austin this morning, but I saw it is something that Joe Prusaitis has picked up as part of the old Rogue three-race trail series. It is notably tough, I think. Therefore, I saved the gas money for next weekend where I'll run something -- Pennsylvania or Temple, Texas. :)

Speaking of Austin, Kingwood's Bill Schroeder, who works for Dell, is burning up the capital city's Summer Stampede 5K Series already. He was third overall in the first edition on May 14 (in 18:35). He didn't run two Wednesday nights ago, but was 5th overall last Wednesday night with a time of 18:56. [I thought I might have seen our TIR teammate Jessica Alexander in the results, but to no avail. Yet, I'm sure.]
