Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Great Quote!

"John McCain has served his country longer in a POW camp than his opponent has in the United States Senate," California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "I only play an action hero in the movies. John McCain is a real action hero.

Notice to All Employees

As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:

1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally among all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a "fair shake."

2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are "too busy for overtime" to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.

3. All top management will now be referred to as "the government." We will not participate in this "pooling" experience because the law doesn't apply to us.

4. The "government" will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging its workers to continue to work hard "for the good of all."

5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's "good to spread the wealth." Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more "patriotic."

6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don't feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?) !!!

If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink your vote on November 4th.

Lol Jon, I knew you couldn't resist doing some more political commentary prior to the election. I do sense a modicum of hyperbole slipping into your normally straight and factual blog. See you at the HMSA 25k and we can recap the election result and determine what the world will come to...

I didn't get a chance to do this four years ago, because I didn't have the blog.

My biggest concern is that people in this country will be given a pass in life for choosing to be lazy and not contributing.

The problem in healthcare today is the insurance companies, and until you can evaluate the leadership of every major insurance company and their leaders' political affiliations (which I've never seen anybody do), you can't assign the blame to one side of the aisle or the other.

And the other problem is that we, as a country, don't take care of ourselves. And I'll admit that Obama's initiatives lean more in favor of funding areas such as cancer research and wellness initiatives, which any one can't be too much against.

If Mike Huckabee, who I think would have been a better VP choice than Sarah Palin, can get himself into shape and good health, anybody can do a better job.

Even though I'm still overweight, I can't tell you the last day (thank goodness) other than going to see the chiropractor that I've really had to use my healthcare coverage. And again, I'm thankful for that.

I'll look forward to seeing you as well and we can also discuss how I did on my first ride on Sunday on my new bike.
