Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sunday Night Treadmill Run

Should I have gotten my butt out of bed and gone and run with the Striders out at Terry Hershey Park this morning? Yes! But short of that, I went to Bally's in The Woodlands early this evening and got what I felt was a productive one (1) hour run on the treadmill.

Typically, I really don't like spending a lot of time on the treadmill; however, I wanted to see if the lack of stamina was more from the heat (here) and the altitude (in Albuquerque) and I think it is both.

I felt really, really good about the run even though I didn't have the speed up terribly high. In fact, the treadmill only registered 4.27 miles. However, I know if I'm running for an hour on the roads, I'm going to be right at 6 miles, regardless of the conditions.

My goal was to run an hour without stopping and I accomplished that. I put the initial setting on 4.0 mph and then took it up one notch every ten (10) minutes. When I started the last ten minutes, the setting was on 4.5 mph and I took it up .1 mph every two (2) minutes until I finished.

What I got a chance to do though was to also work on form as well as trying to shift the weight in my stride on to the balls of my feet as opposed to my heel as a flat-footed runner (at times).

I may try to use the treadmill a little bit more often here in the summer time to try and increase my distance/time. I was able to visualize myself tonight running two (2) hours or more without stopping. That was an encouragement especially as I've been struggling of late.

Off to Centerville, Texas tomorrow morning! And another 8:30 a.m. start!

Jon,

Had you come out you would have been joined by Brett, Rich, Kevin, Steve, Karen, Yong, Celeste, HoJin, Avery, Tim, Carole, Manny, Lynlee, Clarence and Becky. That's the good news. The bad news was it was hot and humid and horrible; we all suffered. Breakfast afterwards at Sandy's was goooood.

Cheers, Steve

Wow ... haven't seen HoJin's name mentioned in a month of Sunday's. Got introduced to Sandy's breakfast the last time I was out there with Megan, Gavin, Lee and Sam. It was good. (Although I still like IHOP just as well.)

That's interesting -- I also run slower on the treadmill than outside. I just hate the thing.
