Fired Up 5K Race Report
When I get down to talking about particular individuals, I actually finished comparatively still about right where I should have.
The official results show a chip time in today's Fired Up 5K in Sugar Land of 30:42.3. (The gun time was 31:03.6.) My stopwatch though had: 30:47.84. Which means that I started my watch 5 seconds too soon. Not sure how I can do that.
Some days you have it. Others you don't. Today was a "don't" day BUT I had a lot of fun, as always. I had Waverly there with me and I got to see two of my better female friends for the first time in awhile: Whitney La Rocca, 28, of Katy and Becky Stevens, 43, of Houston. They both kicked my behind today. Whitney ran in 28:57.4 and Becky turned in a nice time of 27:46.7 (9th in her age group).
My splits with the 30:47.84 time are as follows:
Mile 1 - 9:15.88 (This was my first warning that it was going to be tough. I was hoping for a sub 9.)
Mile 2 - 10:12.23 (Slowest mile 2 since 6/25/05)
Last 1.1 - 11:20.73 (Slowest last 1.1 since 7/9/05. I'll take the 5.54 difference off here!)
Not really much to report on my running in this one. My legs felt heavy, particularly my thighs. Whereas I had run the last three (3) events completely without stopping other than for water, I had to stop twice other than to take on water.
The Striders' running coach Steve Shepard reported that 39 club members raced on Monday with 17 taking home hardware. Pretty impressive. (And looking through the race results on the Yahoo list there are lots of new names and people to meet!)
Long-time Masters runner, Joe Melanson of Orange, ran extremely strong in winning by defeating Strider Eric Glaves by 42 seconds. Melanson won with a time of 17:19.3. (Interestingly enough, the difference between Melanson's chip and gun time - and he was at the beginning - is 4.9 seconds. RunWild Timing was the timing company for this race.)
The women's division was won by Humble's Zoey Beckner in a time of 19:08.1 which is better than the four (4) races this spring/summer where she posted times of 20:08 (Heights 5K), 20:38 (Pilot Club of Columbus 5K), 20:28 (Chuy's Hot to Trot 5K) and 20:24.6 (Astros Race for the Pennant 5K).
The master's divisions were won by Bayou City Road Runners' Mike Crowley and Bonnie Jo Barron in 18:08.9 and 20:42.3, respectively.
The most notable performance of the day belonged to The Woodlands' (and Strider) Pam Paling who reeled in a PR! of 25:26.3. (Pam is a co-director with Lisa Ruthven of HARRA's Power in Motion program that begins this Wednesday night.)
The women's 50-54 female division was tough today as Eva Luckey (HMSA) edged Yong Collins (Strider) by less than 4 seconds. Houston Harriers' Billie-Kay Melanson of Orange and Striders Julie Rutledge and Patti Sears rounded out a very competitive top 5 in that age division.
Here are other times of people that I know or know of and some of my comments (unsolicited, of course):
