Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Marathon Kids Volunteers Needed on 10/22

From HARRA President Tom Stilwell --

As you know HARRA has committed to find 150 volunteers to help kick off the Marathon Kids Project at Rice University on October 22, 2005.

Through general e-mails and requests, we have approximately 100 volunteers and need 50 more. Please urge your clubs to volunteer for the Marathon Kids Project. It's one morning of your time, but the impact will last all year. It's now time for the clubs to show that they value and care about the entire running community from the youngest runners on up.

From HARRA Volunteer Directors Caroline & Marla Burum --

PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING........VOLUNTEERS ARE REALLY NEEDED!!!

We are urging you to consider helping with a wonderful program being instituted in the Houston elementary schools, the Marathon Kids Program. HARRA has offered to help provide the bulk of the volunteers for their Kick-off Event, which is only 3 weeks away. We've had some response to previous requests for volunteers, but we are still very much in need of help.

This program is a free, endurance building running/walking/nutrition program for kindergartners through 5th graders. The City of Houston is helping to sponsor this through the children in HISD. Participants will run a marathon .... one (1) mile at a time over the course of the current school year. Marathon Kids is important for the health of our world's children.

Although extremely popular with all children, this free program is especially important for those children and their families who are most at risk for obesity and associated diseases. This program throws the net wide to reach the child (and the family!) who up to this point has been sedentary. It originated in Austin where over 6,800 school children have participated. With the sponsorship of Whole Foods Market, more than 80,000 little children in Texas are projected to participate this year. Please visit http://www.marathonkids.com/ for more information.

The kick off event is scheduled for Sat, 10/22/05 from 7:00am - Noon at the Rice University Track and Field Stadium. It is slated to be a Texas size event, featuring the City of Houston Mayor, Bill White, and musician Shawn Colvin, in addition to some celebrity athletes.

HARRA will be providing all 170 volunteers that will be needed and volunteers are needed from either 7:00am-12:00pm, 8:00am - 11:30am, or 8:30am - 11:30am, depending on where you are assigned. There will be a "captain" named for each area of volunteer activity, and they will be asked to attend a dress rehearsal for training on Thursday, 10/20 at 5:00pm at Rice University.

Please respond to Marla Burum if you are interested in volunteering. Please indicate whether or not you are bilingual, which shift you prefer to work, and whether or not you are interested in being a captain over the volunteers of a particular area. And just a reminder that you will be earning HARRA VVIP points for helping out.

Thank you so much!
