Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Spring Sunday Night 5.3-Miler

When I stopped at the mile 4 water stop at today's USA Space City 10 Miler, I got water from my daughter, Waverly, and gave her a kiss. :) (My friend, Shelly Stephenson, and her daughter saw us before the race and asked her if she wanted to help them out. Waverly actually loves that more than running!)

Whenever she's with me at a race, I always get a kiss from her before I get in line to start. So it isn't a rare thing; however, I heard somebody comment as I took off again: "Awww, that's sweet!" All of that to say that there is nothing better to work on a rough race then to help your child plan to reach a goal.

When I saw Shelley after the race, while she was serving food, she told me that Waverly wasn't looking forward to the 5 miles tonight. And I told Shelley, "Hey, Dad isn't pressuring on this one! I swear!" Because if I was, I would expect people to take me to task.

We ended up doing more than 5. Actually, if my "google map" from last week is correct, we did 5.325 miles. We did the 2.1-mile loop twice and the .375-mile down and back to the cul de sac three (3) times. (I thought I remembered it being more .35 miles.)

She did really, really good. We brisk walked it since I had a long day and we went to Astroworld for a few hours today. Here are the numbers:

First 2.1 miles - 32:07.43 - 15:18/mile
(Less than a minute - 50.70 seconds - to get some water/Gatorade)
Second 2.1 miles - 31:28.59 - 15:00/mile
First .375 miles - 5:33.01 - 14:48/mile ("google map" - .379)
Second .375 miles - 5:32.67 - 14:48/mile
Third .375 miles - 4:39.62 - 12:27/mile

Overall (5.325 miles) - 1:19:21.32 - 14:54/mile

She just walked into the room I have now as an office (post-Hurricane Rita) before she went to bed and I told her about the mileage and she said, "That means we have just a little bit more to go next week for 5.5 miles." I think that really meant: "Dad, don't try going and doing 6 on me next weekend!"

That's pretty impressive Jon. You ran 10 miles in the morning, walked around Astroworld and then ran 5 miles in the evening. That's quite a work-out!

WTG!

Steve,

We brisked walk it Sunday evening so I won't even profess to running it (and don't think that I did.)

The tops of my quads are still sore this morning, but I think that is more from the hills in Helotes.

As far as Astroworld was concerned, we were there no more than three and a half hours. We got on four rides during that time (Texas Cyclone, Batman, Greezed Lightning and Serial Thriller.)

Six Flags was in slow down mode. They had one set of cars running on three of those rides (of course, GL can only have one set at any time). They would run the ride, unload, load and run it again. Any other time, they would have two or sometimes three cars running.

That may keep my money out of Six Flags' pocket for awhile.
