Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Refocusing

OK, so I've done three marathons. What next? Honestly, I'm not sure.

(And believe me, I'm thankful as there are those that wish that they were ready to bite off the challenge and can't -or- just aren't there yet!)

I took this week off. Not all entirely by design. (It got cold here in Bloomington Wednesday night and I didn't bring any long sleeve gear - and I don't like running at the Bloomington Sports Plex here. So I'll run tonight or get to the gym before 8 p.m. since Bally's in The Woodlands closes now early on Friday nights.)

Waverly is going to Luke's this weekend to get a new pair of shoes that should get her through the Aramco Half Marathon in January. (She had a good practice last night. Her team will have seven (7) 5th and 6th graders and she won't have the pressure of being one of the better girls on a weaker team. She's solidly the third best player and the top two are scrappers - and she is fortunate that she won't have to play against them.)

I've not made a decision for Sunday yet. I thought about going and doing the San Antonio Half Marathon, but I think I'll save my travelling for next weekend. I'm probably going to do the Motive Bison Stampede (Half Marathon) in Austin on Sunday the 20th, but may go to Flower Mound on Saturday morning the 19th and do a Metric Half, which is 13.1K.

So Saturday I'll make a decision on whether or not I'll do the 8.4K. (I know Jessica, Cassie and Sarah all need somebody to spur them on a little bit! We'll see. Jennifer, Holden and Steve (Bezner) will all be doing the 25K and Vic will be handling his first AED/CPR assignment.)

As far as a next marathon, I'm not sure. (I don't feel as bad about NYC after reading Jim Braden's report. He was off nearly 20 minutes from his Houston time and he's in great shape.) Actually, the smart thing to do, since my legs are fine *now*, may be to turn right around and do another one. I know that there are a lot of folks who do Houston and then come right back and do Austin. (Hmmm ... there's always White Rock.)

But if I'm going to run ten (10) marathons though, I want to make them different states and join Steve and Paula Boone's 50 States Marathon club. (Little Rock in March may be a target.)

The bottom line, though, is that I want to remain active and have fun!

FYI - our TNT coach Carol Steele is doing the San Antonio Half - could be a rematch for you from RTW and Blue Bell.

also - the Motive race is a lot tougher than Huntsville. VERY hilly.

Bill,

I saw that about Don and Carol going over there. I say I'll wait until February 11th for that rematch, thank you. :)

I have a good friend that works for Motive and he told me once that when his co-workers say that they are going to run "Rain Creek", he goes another route!

Actually, my five best half marathons weren't exactly on flat courses. I think that I actually thrive on some hilly courses ... just depending on what my weight is and what condition that I'm in. Four of those five came within 60 days of one another.
