Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

HARRA Team Competition Tight; Striders Hold Large Club Lead

"All hands on deck!" for the Chevron Houston Marathon is the cry of three (3) running clubs -- the Houston Striders, the Bayou City Road Runners (BCRR) and the Tornados Running Club -- in HARRA's Fall Series Team Competition.

Just a year ago, the Striders held a commanding 223-to-209 lead after the Houstonian Lite 30K en route to capturing its first Fall Series Team championship in club history despite being outscored in the marathon, 50-48, by the Bayou City Road Runners.

This fall, after strong showings in the 10-Miler and 20K by BCRR, the Striders have winnowed the Road Runners' lead from 24 to just three (3) points, 238-235. In striking distance with 216 points and already guaranteed its best fall performance since at least 1999, the Tornados though would have to win at least five (5) of the six (6) categories and have either BCRR or the Striders finish third in each one -- not likely -- to have a shot at the Fall crown.

The complete Team standings are as follows: Bayou City Road Runners (238), Houston Striders (235), Tornados (216), Terlingua Track Club (156), Al Lawrence Running Club (126), Bay Area Running Club (93), Houston Harriers (73), Houston Masters Sports Association (73), Houston Fit (37), Finish Line Sports (31), PTI (20), Fort Bend Fit (16), Runners' High Club (6), Clear Lake Fitness Club (2), Galloway Running Club (2) and Kenyan Way (2).

In the Club Competition, the Striders hold a commanding 425-366 lead over BCRR.

If the Striders are able to at least replicate their marathon club performance from 2005, they will become the first club since 1999 to score 500 points or more in either the Spring or Fall Series competition directed by HARRA -and- they will win their second straight Fall Series Club championship after BCRR won it four straight years from 2000-2003.

Like in the Team competition, the Tornados have already scored more Club points (271) than in any of the last six (6) years.

In a tale of two HARRA-affiliated clubs, Bay Area Running Club is poised to score its highest Club finish ever as it is currently in 6th place (last year they were 8th) while Houston Fit needs at least 41 Club points to avoid its worst showing since 1999 when it scored a Fall Series win with 452 points.

The complete Club standings are as follows: Houston Striders (425), Bayou City Road Runners (366), Tornados (271), Terlingua Track Club (170), Al Lawrence Running Club (144), Bay Area Running Club (103), Houston Masters Sports Association (77), Houston Harriers (75), Houston Fit (51), Finish Line Sports (33), Fort Bend Fit (24), PTI (20), Runners' High Club (6), Galloway Running Club (2) and Kenyan Way (2).

I wonder if they're ever going to update the Runners of the Season. The 30K was 3 and a 1/2 weeks ago.

That should be next up from Roger Boak.

Steve Shepard is on the first "send out" list from Roger as HARRA's club contact for the Striders. As there are many Striders in the "money", Steve will post it to the Strider Marathon Yahoo Group as soon as it comes in.

There was some great competition this year.

It would be nice to have the 30K results in for the RotS standings before the marathon.
