Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Texas Trilogy Award Goes to 11 Runners

Since awards seem to be the theme of the day, here's one - the Texas Trilogy - that nobody can argue with! (And if someone does, the response should be, "Hey, Bud, out on the trails with me for 212 miles!)

Eleven (11) runners completed that task on Saturday and Sunday of being the only ones to complete the Sunmart 50 Miler, the Bandera 100K and the Rocky Raccoon 100 Miler in two (2) months, bringing the total since its inception in 2004 to 28!

Three of the 11 runners -- Fort Worth's Rene Villalobos, Dripping Springs' David Berdis and Houston's Christopher Rampacek -- accomplished the feat for the second time.

The idea for the award, as he says, "just for the fun of it," belongs to Rocky Raccoon race director Joe Prusaitis.

"I coach a few folks now and again and will get a few others asking for some advice for running Bandera 100km or Rocky 100mi," Prusaitis said. "This usually leads to a build up schedule including Sunmart 50mi. Over a few beers and the normal amount of trash talk, I started talking about doing all three for the big dogs.

"And some people took the hook," he added. "I figured that if they actually did it, I should get them some sort of recognition."

This year's recipients are as follows:

38:53:00 -- Robert King, Porter, TX, 44 (3rd fastest time ever)
44:09:33 -- Bridget De La Rosa-Herrejon, TX, 32 (fastest female ever)
46:10:33 -- Michael Hayes, San Antonio, TX, 31 (the youngest ever)
47:46:47 -- Stephen Hudgens, Fort Worth, TX, 50
48:30:53 -- Stuart Skeeter, Houston, TX, 35
49:25:27 -- David Corley, Fort Worth, TX, 44
49:26:13 -- Rene Villalobos, Fort Worth, TX, 47
49:58:46 -- David Berdis, Dripping Springs, TX, 47
54:10:25 -- Kimberly Pilcher, Houston, TX, 42 (6th female overall, 3rd fastest)
55:18:05 -- Mark Raymond, Austin, TX, 43
57:45:27 -- Christopher Rampacek, Houston, TX, 54

Two runners - Steve Hookanson, 49, and Duane Lewis, 50, both of Lake Charles - narrowly missed the '05-'06 version of the award after missing the 30-hour cutoff on Sunday. The duo covered the three courses in 62:01:59 and 62:33:39, respectively.

"I had a good friend make some neat awards that they could hang the three awards, three hats, or three jackets on and they turned out pretty nice," said the veteran race director. "This is the third year and so far it has been sort of a secret award.

"I never pushed it, advertised it, or even much talked about it, but these awards are presented each year at the Rocky awards. Its been kind of fun."
