Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Thursday Morning 7.8-Mile Run in Stanley Park

On Wednesday life and work kicked me in the butt; therefore, I didn't get in a run until early this morning on Thursday (at about 6:30 a.m. Pacific time.)

The plan was simple: Run from the hotel (which I later checked out of to move into an apartment here) to the entry of Stanley Park, around it (which I had heard that it was 10 kilometers in distance but the city's Parks website says that it is 5.5 miles or 8.85 kilometers) and back.

As I was running, I felt a little sluggish. However, I needed to get the miles in.

While running I kept asking myself if I was the same person who 1.) a few weeks ago posted a new half-marathon personal record and 2.) a month ago finished my 4th marathon in five weeks with a PR and a third best time at that distance.

I couldn't completely execute the plan though. As I approached Lions Gate Bridge along the northern seawall, they were doing repairs to the seawall and had cut off access. Since I didn't know where to cut back into the park and back out to the outer trail, plus that I didn't have all morning, I simply decided to turnaround. (There's an excellent overhead aerial picture of the Park at this Wikipedia link.)

From the Marriott Pinnacle to Stanley Park: 12:38.47
Around Stanley Park to some distance short of Lions Gate Bridge: 27:52.68
Return to the Stanley Park entrance: 28:09.00
Return to the hotel: 12:26.63

Total running time: 1:21:06.78
Total miles: Unknown (My guess would be a little over 7, given my pace recently.)

This map seems to indicate that I ran 4.5 kilometers out and back inside the Park. I measured on the HARRA online measuring tool 1.281 miles to the entry point.

If it was 5.58 miles (9 kilometers) in the Park and 2.56 miles round trip, that would mean that I did 8.14 miles at a 9:58 per mile pace. I think it might have been more like 8.5 kilometers (or 5.27 miles). That would net 7.83 miles at a 10:22 per mile pace. That is more realistic!

It was a little cooler out this morning than others, especially as I turned around 40 minutes into the run. However, I enjoyed it as I'll be back in the Park on Saturday to do the Spring Forward 5K that is put on by the Vancouver Falcons Athletic Club.

While running this morning, I determined that I would do my best Dean Karnazes impersonation one day and run home from work (once I figure out how to juggle clothes, etc.). Actually it would probably be no more than a 10-mile run that included going over the Lions Gate Bridge, which I've already done a few times.

"The Project for Public Spaces ranked Stanley Park as the sixteenth best park in the world and sixth best in North America"

Then you come back to Texas and our parks are 49 out of 50 in funding. At least we still have Huntsville State Park.

When I was in Vancouver last year we rented bikes and rode around Stanley Park. I remember thinking how nice it would be to be able to run there every day!
