Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Victor Lopez Bayou City Classic Notes

The 24th annual Victor Lopez Bayou Classic track and field meet was held this past weekend at Rice's Track and Soccer Stadium. The meet, which was renamed last summer in honor of retired head coach Victor Lopez, featured many of Houston's best prep athletes as well as top university teams including Rice, Harvard, Iowa State and Houston. It also served as a prelude for next weekend's Texas Relays in Austin, which is sure to turn in some stellar performances.

Girls 800 Meter Run High School
1, Green, Brittany, Spring Westfield, 2:13.15. 2, Dalton, Jasmine, Stafford HS, 2:17.04. 3, Jackson, Shannon, Houston Westbury, 2:17.22. 4, Fowler, Halsey, Houston Lamar, 2:18.09. 5, Tidwell, Raquel, Cinco Ranch, 2:19.34. 6, Mose, Christina, Pearland HS, 2:19.72. 7, Cetina, Itzel, Cinco Ranch, 2:20.90. 8, Stone, Kristen, Cinco Ranch, 2:23.17.

Green, who ran a 2:15.58 in Heat 1 to qualify with the fastest time, is a heckuva of talent who runs on the same HS team as Nichole Jones. At the district cross country meet last November, Green defeated Jones for the 22-5A title.

Girls 1500 Meter Run High School
1, Jones, Nichole, Westfield High S, 4:31.78. 2, Stone, Kristen, Cinco Ranch, 4:51.67. 3, Cetina, Itzel, Cinco Ranch, 4:54.88. 4, Fowler, Halsey, Houston Lamar, 4:55.44. 5, Mose, Christina, Pearland HS, 4:58.95. 6, Keithan, Alli, Cinco Ranch, 5:02.75. 7, Daniels, Michlene, Pearland HS, 5:03.28. 8, Cooper, Rubeneisha, Pearland HS, 5:04.71.

No surprise here as Nichole dusted the field. This event was run in two sections -- Pearland's Cooper, who finished first in the second section, was the only one that scored in the meet. Two familiar names (to me, at least) finished behind her in the second section -- Austin middle schooler Bree Schrader (5:06.80) and Spring HS' Faith Sanders (5:07.57) -- both Run The Woodlands 5K winners.

Girls 3000 Meter Run High School
1, Jones, Nichole, Westfield High S, 9:52.53. 2, Mericle, Nicole, John Cooper, 10:12.55. 3, Bottoms, Shelby, Houston Lamar, 10:41.59. 4, Stewart, Tricia, Cinco Ranch, 10:47.83. 5, Daniels, Michlene, Pearland HS, 10:49.38. 6, Keithan, Alli, Cinco Ranch, 10:53.06. 7, Schrader, Bree, Christian Liberty, 11:05.05. 8, Citizen, Christi, Humble High Scho, 11:05.26.

Mericle, the best private schooler in Texas from The Woodlands' John Cooper School, couldn't catch Jones, who was 20 seconds ahead. The most impressive feat is Schrader's 7th place finish. She's 12!

Women 5000 Meter Run College
1, Monteau, Ashley, Stephen F. Austin State, 16:54.47. 2, Yoder, Sarah, Rice, 16:57.42. 3, Wells, Callie, Rice, 16:57.54. 4, Daniels, Marissa, Rice, 17:02.63. 5, Calhoun, Stefanie, Unattached (formerly of Texas Tech), 17:05.13. 6, Gorry, Kate, Rice, 17:05.64. 7, Graham, Renee, Lamar, 17:38.26. 8, Lemke, Meghan, Texas A&M-Cc, 17:39.68.

I think it is hard to put into perspective what the collegiate athletes do compared to the road racers that we see week-in and week-out. Perhaps the most competitive 5K this spring in Texas was the UTSA Diploma Dash 5K in San Antonio in early February. The winner was Liza Hunter-Galvan and she ran it in 17:00 while Waco's Jody Hawkins was 2nd in 17:26. Gorry was one of the SPC's all-time greats at St. John's HS in Houston.

Women 10000 Meter Run College
1, Field, Emily, Unattached, 39:19.17. 2, Eder, Elizabeth, Trinity U., 39:34.69. 3, Horn, Elke, Sam Houston, 39:47.90. 4, Zersen, Nikki, Sam Houston, 41:36.84. 5, Robbins, Dana, Texas Lutheran, 50:05.42.

The only reason why I included this here was because of Emily Field, who is probably one of the best female athletes in TAPPS history out of Dallas' Ursuline Academy. She ran collegiately for SMU. This would have earned her 4th at the Bayou City Classic 10K.

Men 5000 Meter Run College
1, Songok, Shadrack, Texas A&M-CC, 14:09.58. 2, Farris, Marc, Stephen F. Austin, 14:44.98. 3, Acuna, Julian, Stephen F. Austin, 14:53.18. 4, Hewamudilage, Marcel, Rice, 15:03.54. 5, Armenteros, Luis, Unattached, 15:17.10. 6, Keithan, Colby, Rice, 15:23.34. 7, Joseph, Rodney, Stephen F. Austi, 15:24.41. 8, Maxwell, Justin, Rice, 15:32.52.

Same commentary as the women above. The only men's runners that we see in town get close to 2nd in this event has been Wade and Armenteros. Give Armenteros credit for stepping up competing against the collegiate athletes. It is amazing that some of Houston's road racers didn't give Gabriel Rodriguez the same type of respect questioning his desire to attempt to compete at a national level as opposed to staying here locally where he could have been a bigger fish in a smaller pond. Also competing "unattached" was Houston's Cornelo Garibay, who was 15th in 16:08.58.
