Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Not Exactly A Sunday Brick

It wasn't a brick workout in the truest sense of the definition, but you couldn't have told my legs that it was any different.

I went to Bally's in The Woodlands at 5 p.m. and logged an hour on the stationery bike (random, level 7), which stated 21 miles. Waverly and I went to get a bite to eat and made a trip to Barnes and Noble after I had come back and gotten a shower.

Then after updating a few files for the website, I went out for a run just before 11 p.m. and my legs felt like a ton of bricks. It was an ugly feeling! I wanted to keep going straight where I have the option to do 2.1 miles instead of 4.1, but I felt like I needed to do the extra two (2).

The first 1.7 miles came in at an all-time worst 19:02.20 while the back 2.4 miles was in 27:30.46 for a grand total of 46:32.66 (over 4.1 miles). Even with the humidity, I didn't succumb to walking but once for 50 steps/30 seconds at the turnaround. So that was a plus if one could be had.

I kept thinking about Steve Bezner calling his miles today "junk miles"; however, I know that if I don't want Sarah to beat me in three (3) weeks at the Webster Bicycle Duathlon #3 that I had better make them count for something!

Way to go Jon. Yeah, I'm not sure if there is such a thing as junk miles because those slow miles can be as tough as a 5k race.

Thanks to Google, here is an interesting piece on junk miles: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/6/6_1/redefining-junk-miles.shtml

There are threee types of miles and none of them are "junk miles". There are miles you have run, miles you need to run and mile you did not run.

Thanks guys! I've had too many miles that I didn't run lately.

Just my $0.02 on junk miles...the only miles I would consider junk miles are miles that hinder my progress. Almost any miles that you run will aid your progress. If, for example, I did a run this morning, and for whatever reason, I opted to go out and do a few miles this evening, which made me have to cut tomorrow's speed workout short, or made me run my intervals slower, then those few miles this evening were "junk miles." For me, this doesn't happen often, so almost all of my miles, even slow recovery miles, have a purpose.

I have a feeling we're going to be pretty close to each other the entire race, Jon! :)
