Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Upcoming Seven Hills / HRB Competition

Well, it looks like the Seven Hills Running Club is going to kick us - the Houston Running Bloggers - in the rear-end at Run The Woodlands 5K on Saturday, August 12th as far as numbers may be concerned.

And if that happens, I'm OK with it. I might not be happy about it, but I'm OK with it. They have responded to the Challenge in a mighty way. (That is, if Ken gets them all to The Woodlands in his little light blue VW!)

So I'll just hope that in the equivalent number of places that we can score higher in the cross country scoring. I certainly think that we have that possibility, but we'll have to hustle.

We have a number of our members who have upgraded their membership to include their spouse in the Challenge so that we can match up as far as numbers are concerned. We'll just have to hope that we're faster spot-for-spot.

(If you've ever been to a Run The Woodlands 5K, you'll know that we use a card-scoring system that features blue cards for the men and red cards for the women. For the Challenge next Saturday, we'll have orange cards for HRB and green cards for Seven Hills. This will allow us to calculate the scoring quickly.)

To all of those ready to make the drive to the far north side of town the Saturday after next, I just want to say "Thanks!" ahead of time for stepping up to the Challenge. (Even though we might get our hands a little messy scooping out ice cream!)

I'm excited that with a couple of the groups (Team In Training, Ten Beats for Texas) that Bill Dwyer is encouraging to come out that we may push the 100 mark in attendance that morning, which will be fun!

I hope everybody at the 7 hills club got the word that this special race is on Sunday, instead of Saturday.

Vic,

That was certainly suggested; however, it was after the date that we agreed to the scoring already.

Again, the bottom line is, "We're going to have fun!"

And besides, I get to have everyone out on my home course. :)

Keith,

Hans can be a little slow, but I'm not sure that we can get that one by him - or the college kids.

Wait, you're still a college kid too, so to speak. :)

Good idea Vic, I was also thinking there could also be a handicap for club years in existence.
