Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Monday Night: 4.1 Miles

Sunday: 45:47.62 (11:10) -- 18:56.24 (11:08) and 26:51.18 (11:13)
Monday: 45:27.28 (11:05) -- 18:13.92 (10:43) and 27:13.36 (11:21)

I felt the pace quicken early and, with the humidity, I paid for it later. Dinner at 7:45 p.m. hadn't settled real well either. The next run comes in Vancouver, British Columbia. :)

I've added a couple of races to the dance card. The Squamish Days 10K in Squamish, British Columbia on Sunday and the Parkersburg, West Virginia News and Sentinel Half Marathon in just less than three (3) weeks on Saturday, August 19th. (This one will be hotter than can be!)

Elsewhere ... I made it to Finish Line Sports in Sugar Land and On The Run in Clear Lake today as I finished dropping off flyers for HARRA's Party In The Park. In fact, the remainder of the 500 flyers will be in the race packets for Saturday's Maribelle's 5K. (Thanks to On The Run co-owner Jay Lee for helping us with that.)

I got a chance to visit at length with Jay, store manager Chris Bittinger and assistant Vera Balic. In fact, I was there until closing time!

And while I was there, I picked up the latest copy of Health & Fitness Sports Magazine.

For you space buffs, this issue (pages 30-32) is autograph quality as it features Astronaut and local Seabrook runner Karen Nyberg. The online version is here.

In the "On The Run" section on page 74 is an article titled, "Spice up your training with innovative techniques", written by Dr. Christopher Rampacek.

And finally, on page 38 in the "Sharp Focus" section, there is a feature story on HARRA member and Houston Strider Lana Shadwick.

Lots of great tips to be had in this month's edition!

Great article about Lana Shadwick. I think I've seen her around. She's a hottie.

We met Karen Nyberg at the Kid's Marathon thing at Rice University last year. She's awesome.
