Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Cross Country Results from the Weekend

+ Luke's Locker - The Woodlands store employee and multi-time Run The Woodlands 5K participant Andrew Perry, who ran at last year's UIL 4A state cross country meet for Caney Creek, finished 11th in his first collegiate cross country meet at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Perry, who runs for College of the Southwest in Hobbs, New Mexico, covered the 6K course in 20:55.3 as he and his fellow teammates won the event from Southwestern, Tarleton State, St. Edwards's and University of the Incarnate Word.

+ Fellow store employee Nicole Mericle of The Woodlands John Cooper School made a smashing collegiate debut for the Rice Owls at the Rice XC Invitational Saturday morning. She covered the 5K (I'm assuming 4K though) in 14:43, good enough for 5th as the Owls defeated SMU, Lamar, A&M-Corpus Christi and Stephen F. Austin.

+ The younger brother of Nicole Jones, who is a multi-time UIL champion in cross country and track and field for Westfield HS, Jonathon Jones won the 3,200 meters freshman division Saturday at the Rice XC Invitational. Jones, who has one of the top 00-12 times ever at Run The Woodlands 5K, also runs for the Mustangs at Westfield.

+ In the girls varsity 3,200-meter cross country run at the Rice XC Invitational, Brazoswood's Lauren Smith, who runs a lot of the races that BARRA puts on and runs in, easily captured the win in 11:25. Westfield's Brittany Green, who defeated Nicole Jones at the Region III meet last November, was 15th while Bree Schrader, who holds the all-time best 00-12 record at Run The Woodlands 5K earlier this year in a time of 20:09, finished 15th overall in 12:37. Two-time defending Huntsville 5K winner Alyssa Crocker of Cypress Falls was 29th in 13:01. Schrader's older sister, Maddee, was 59th in 13:58.

+ In the boys varsity 3,200 meters, St. Pius X junior Joey D'Eramo was 6th in 10:27. (I met the D'Eramo family at the Rice All-Comers meet). Ryan DiMarco of Fort Bend Elkins was 62nd in 12:18.

+ At Katy's Mayde Creek Invitational on Saturday, HMSA member and Cypress Ridge cross country runner Sarah Collazos was 21st in 16:10 while running against strong teams from Kingwood, A&M Consolidated and Spring Branch Memorial.

I remember when Lauren first started running some of our area races. Dang, she's fast. And she's very nice and humble from what I've seen.
