Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Fired Up 5K Race Report Part 2

As I stated from Saturday's race report down at Alvin's BENeezy Purple Monkey 10k, I'm pretty fortunate of the people that I get to meet through this sport -- 99% of them are class acts and the memories from interactions with them are good ones. However, it's truly sad that everyone can't rise to the challenge and be that way.

It was good to see and visit with the following people on Monday:

+ John DiMarco, who had a good day on the course with a 6th place age group finish in 22:41.8. He introduced me to a gentleman by the name of Jim Peiffer. Nice guy! (John's son, Ryan, kicks off his high school cross country season next Saturday morning!)

+ The 1st and 2nd place finishers in the 70-and-over category, Ino Cantu of Richmond and Jim Braden of The Woodlands. Ino finished 1st in 21:40.1 and lowered his own course record for his age group. Jim came in 2nd in 24:02.4. (The two individuals are as gracious as can be about their abilities.) Everytime I visit with Jim, I learn something new. I was aware of Jim's 11 Ironman finishes (from Bill Dwyer), but in talking about a friend's attempt to finish a 100 to put himself in a position to attempt to qualify for Western States, I learned that Jim had done the Western States 100 twice -- 1990 (29:47:34) and 1996 (29:41:52). Jim encouraged me to give Sunmart a try this December as he felt that the ultras - given my build - is something that I may be more suited for.

+ (Speaking of Western States, check out September's edition of Footprints to see what kind of company HARRA member German Collazos is now keeping after finishing his 4th straight Western States this past June.)

+ Talked at length with fellow The Woodlands Running Club member Nora Wilson, a two-time Ironman finisher. (She's thinking about doing both 10-milers the weekend of October 14-15th.)

+ I had a really pleasant conversation with Wonedwossen Goshu, 3rd in the 30-34 age group in a time of 19:30.4, and Nancy Daniels, who was 8th in the 45-49 in 26:47.6. We talked quite a bit about travelling and getting the opportunity to run and race while out on the road. I really appreciated them taking the time to say Hi! and to chat for awhile.

+ I visited a little bit before the race with former Striders president Sandy Wollangk, who was out cheering runners on yesterday morning.

+ As the awards ceremony was going on, I had a good time conversing with Power In Motion (PIM) coach, Finish Line Sports member and fellow HARRA Board Member Audrey Christiansen. She wasn't racing; however, she pointed out to me somebody whose name I knew but had never seen her in person before -- Donna Sterns. (Donna had 5 Open and 7 Masters Warm-Up Series wins over the last 20 years.)

+ Assistant store manager at On The Run in Clear Lake, Seabrook resident and BARC member Vera Balic took first in the 35-39 age group with a time of 22:07.5. (Vera's father, Boris Balic of Bellingham, Washington, is a long-time veteran of the Houston Marathon.) I was sharing with Vera my border-crossing woes a couple of months ago and it turns out that we'll be at the same 15k in Bellingham in two (2) weeks. The conversation was, "Yeah, I'll be up there running a 15k in a couple of weeks" and I said, "The Fairhaven Runners..." And we both laughed!

+ Finally met and talked to yesterday's winner Gerardo Mora. Nice guy! Gerardo won in 16:58.1 as it was his 5th win - 4th Masters and 1st Overall - since turning 40 earlier this year. I interviewed him for a piece on the race that I am writing today for October's edition of Footprints.

And now for some of the statistical notes from the event --

+ Mike Crowley won the Masters race for the 2nd year in a row with a time of 18:20.7; however, Mora's time of 16:58.1 snapped Joe Melanson's Masters course record from last year of 17:14.3.
+ Allison Nadolski's winning time of 19:29.6 was the 2nd fastest women's time ever for the events. Zoey Beckner won last year in a time of 19:01.4.
+ Sabra Harvey's effort of 21:04.2 to win the women's masters crown was just .5 seconds faster than Eva Luckey's 21:04.7 in 2004 to make it the fastest time run on the course by a woman 50 or over.
+ Elly Peterson, 19, finished 2nd again in the 15-19 age group, but she sliced her time from 24:59.9 to 21:41.5.
+ Agustina Foglietta, 26, of Houston, won her age group in 21:52.7 (she also won the 20-24 age group in 2004), but it wasn't enough to lower the 25-29 standard set by Rachel Guenther (20:29.0).
+ Bonnie Jo Barron, 44, won her 40-44 age group in 21:09.1 to give her a 2nd place AG, overall Masters and 1st place AG in three (3) years of competition at the event.
+ Miriam Terc, 48, of Katy, finally made it to the top of the age group chart in 45-49 after finishing 3rd in '04 and 2nd in '05. Miriam held off Sugar Land's Elizabeth Grobler by less than 4 seconds to record a winning chip time of 23:14.0.
+ Eva Luckey, 52, won her third straight 50-54 age group in 21:45.2 defeating Donna Sterns, Yong Collins and Nora Wilson.
+ Age group records for women were set by Kingwood's Gloria Mahoney (26:04.2, 55-59), Houston's Mary Ramirez (31:28.3, 65-69) and Rockport's Kay Duplichan (29:20.1, 70+) while the men had the following record-setters -- Houston's Andrew Epperson (18:10.8, 15-19), Houston's Cody Manuel (17:15.7, 20-24), Missouri City's James Thurmond (19:54.8, 60-64) and Houston's Chris Buchanan (22:29.9, 65-69).

I've got a couple more to add, but it is getting late - or rather early!

In 2003 at the Fired up 5K, Jon Butler at age 40, ran a 15:53. Giving him the Master's record for the course and unless Sean shows up it will not be broken anytime soon. Love the stats. Keep up the good work.

Steve,

Thanks. I think (although I could be wrong) that the only stats I saw from the 2003 race did not have ages and I didn't work backwards.

We all missed seeing you guys out there on Monday. I heard from Mr. Kaiser that you were back out running again - and am glad to hear it.

Tell Lance we need to see those 1:40, 1:41, 1:40, 1:42, 1:40 speed work times on his blog!

I forgot Bill Dwyer's 104TX group was doing speedwork tonight. Mine might be 2:30 ...
