Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

HRB 12 Miler

Vic, his friend Jo from Katy Fit, Cassie, June, Edwin and myself got 12 miles in this morning as we went from the Memorial Park Tennis Center all the way to the George R. Brown Convention Center (and the Houston Marathon finish line).

Edwin and I probably had the shortest route at 12.10 miles (6 out and 6.1 back). Cassie and June may have done a little bit more getting to the GRB as they went on some of the trails instead of staying right along Allen Parkway (after getting to Waugh.) Vic and Jo added the return down Blossom instead of Memorial and he said that his Garmin logged 12.89 miles.

Our course? See it here on the USATF site.

Edwin and I were (and thanks to Edwin for going it a little slow) 1:07-change going to the GRB and 1:12-change coming back. Pretty consistent the entire way. I thought that the heat and humidity got us a little bit coming back. Apparently not. (My back was fine, but I didn't try to really push it; however, the pace was good. As I was talking to Sean Wade in the finish line area yesterday after the Komen Race for the Cure 5K and mentioned that I was having some lower back issues, he said, "Be careful and get on the soft stuff" and I tried to do as much running in the grass as I could this morning.)

I heard Bruce Mansur say this morning at the Mile 0 marker - as the Bayou City Road Runners were gathering for their weekend runs at 6:30 a.m. like us - that it was 76 degrees. (We talked with Mark Fraser a little bit at Eleanor Tinsley Park while we were all loading up on water. He was getting in 20 and has the Rocky Raccoon 25K on his schedule next.)

I completely now understand all of the journalism, newspaper and yearbook classes that Edwin teaches at Angleton HS and reportedly Cassie - by her own admission - gave June the complete lowdown on Janet Jackson (no links here!) and her music. Seriously, though, we all had a great time!

June, Vic and myself made a trip to Biba's Greek Pizza for breakfast. Mmmmmm ... good eats! :)
