Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Friday Morning Run

This was actually Thursday's scheduled run that was supposed to be a 2-to-3 mile recovery run from the speed workout on Wednesday night (well, and Tuesday too.) I had spent some time in the UH library earlier that evening so I drove over to Memorial Park to get two loops in -- 5.8 miles. The library closed at 12:45 a.m. so I probably started running at 1:15 a.m.

The first loop came in 30:17.91. (When I finished, I had really begun to hurt quite a bit in my lower back, which may be causing some of the other problems that I'm having in my left leg.)

I walked to the 3-mile marker, back to mile 0 marker and went the other way, but slowed it way down. I ran slowly the entire time and finished in 33:39.67 (still well within that 11-12 mpm target but more than a whole minute per mile slower.)

The rest of Friday was complete rest and by this morning when I woke up at 7 a.m. to head downtown for this morning's Komen Race For The Cure 5K. But after I had been on my feet for about two and a half hours, I still have some pain below the waist in the middle of my back.

I have miles to get in today and tomorrow, but we'll see how it goes.

Jon, I'm not scrutinizing your training, I just have a question. You schedule called for a 2-3 mile recovery run? Is that correct. But you did 6 miles instead? Just for clarification. I can't tell from your post if you rested on Thursday instead of 2-3 or if you did the 6 on Thursday instead of the 2-3. :)

Ok, I need an explanation of the Memorial Park loop -- it's 2.9 miles, right? How does one correctly get to 3? Run one loop, continue to 3, then back to 0?

Every time I think about it I get confused. Of course, I've only run there once. :)

Vic,

It called for 2-to-3. I just felt like doing 2 loops. First loop, I wasn't trying to push or even run it hard, hard, but just ran it. That's when my back started to flare up. So I shortened my stride up to take some pressure off my back and did another loop.

I got done at like 2:15 a.m., went home and slept ... and didn't do anything else.

Sarah,

If you go mile marker 0 all the way around, that's 2.9 miles. If you go past, in either direction (if I'm not mistaken), to the mile 3 marker, that's 3 miles. If you then go back to the mile 0 marker, you just did a 5K.

Hope that muddies up things!

Jon

Plus, my coach said this ...

No worries about running with PIM last night. When given the opportunity to mix and mingle with some nice folks, do take advantage of it.

I’ll let you know if I see any red flag trends.

An occasional back to back harder day won’t kill you ... (same with occasional back to back races).

Have fun this week while you are in town is all I’m saying……we do this for the fun.
