Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

HMSA Classical 25K Stats

Despite excellent running weather, the HMSA Classical 25K experienced one of its worst attended events on Sunday in the past seven (7) years as there were only 1,602 finishers. WalkSports.com spent a good part of Sunday evening searching the Internet for past year's results - missing only 2002 since 2000 - and came up with the following number of finishers:

2000 - 1,713 finishers
2001 - 1,790 finishers
2002 - unavailable
2003 - 2,022 finishers
2004 - 1,730 finishers
2005 - 1,855 finishers
2006 - 1,602 finishers

That freaked me out at first when I saw 2:28 for me because it was so far off from my watch. I was too tired to notice that they had the same (gun) times listed for the chip times as well.

They did get the right amount of time it took us (me at least) to cross the mat so when I did the math it finally added up in my head, if not on their site.

Good to see you!

I'm surprised the turnout was so low considering the great weather we had. Maybe last years miserable, hot and sticky 25k scared everybody away.

I definitely think there's something wrong with their mile markers. If you look at Holden and my splits we both had a very fast mile 4, and a very slow mile 5. That spike/dip doesn't show up with the folks using GPS, so it couldn't have been a water station or hill.

The same thing happened last year.

Hello everyone. My name is Joe and I am far from being an experienced runner, but I love the sport and I am trying my best. I am proud to state that I ran the 25k this past Sunday and I finished at 2:20, this was a pretty good improvement over my last years attempt at the 25k at just under 2:48.

My point for posting is regarding the 2007 marathon. I have run the past three Houston half marathon's, steadily improving each year, and this year is going to be my first full marathon. I am hoping to finish under 4 hours. My question to all of you is rather simple. My stamena seems to be good, except, my legs began to get a little "weak" at mile 14. What can I do between now and Janary 14th to improve my leg strength for the marathon? Should I lift weights, run hills, or something else?

Thank you for any comments and thoughts you may have.

PS - I will be turning 40 the week after the marathon, so this is my birthday present to myself. Wish me luck.

Good luck to all of you in your running endeavors.
