Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Robert Durst runs the TXU Turkey Trot 5K

Supposedly, eccentric multimillionaire Robert Durst, who just recently ended his parole after pleading guilty in Galveston in 2004 to felony evidence tampering and bail-jumping charges, has been seen recently, has become a runner!

Fox 26 Houston investigative reporter Carolyn Canville reported on Tuesday's 9 p.m. news that Durst was photographed running Thanksgiving Day's TXU Energy Turkey Trot 5K.

See the video story, "Robert Durst On The Run," here.

Not familiar with Robert Durst?

Read this from the Chronicle's November 28th story on Robert Durst becoming free of government supervision last Wednesday:

A jury in 2003 acquitted Durst of murder although Durst admitted dismembering neighbor Morris Black's body and tossing the parts into Galveston Bay in garbage bags. Durst testified he panicked after Black died from an accidental gunshot to the head as the two struggled over a pistol in Durst's apartment on Sept. 28, 2001.

Durst testified he was drunk and high on marijuana when he cut up the body. His attorneys told jurors he also suffered from Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism that makes it difficult for sufferers to have normal social contacts and friendships. Black's legs, arms and torso were recovered, but his head was not.

For the entire Chronicle story, please see the following link.

The article quoted his high-powered lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, as saying, "Bob is going to be relieved. I think he wants to fade into anonymity."

It turns out Thursday, a day after his parole ended, Durst was seen in a meeting of Fourth Ward homeowners (where he reportedly owns property) that was attended by City of Houston Mayor Bill White.

Yes, he was acquitted of the crime, but I can be certain that if I do the Jingle Bell Run 5-Miler Sunday afternoon with Waverly ... I'm going to be looking over my - and JoePa's - shoulder.

He was aquitted. While that may have been a bad decision by the jury, it's what they decided. He can run the Turkey Trot if he wants! I was actually pretty surprised at the reaction of everyone in the story saying they were outraged that he was running a race.

Oh well. That's just my opinion.

Robert Durst vs. O.J. Simpson in the Acquitted 5K. Works for me.

Durst owns properties and has attempted to buy more (and has been told his money, according to one company, isn't welcomed.)

What if a company he owns wanted to sponsor a race? What would a race organizer's response be?

What if he became a HARRA member?

Things to think about.

Yes, he might have been acquitted but I'll be wary of him as much as I am of the sex offenders that I know live in the subdivision that I do.
