Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

A Cap Coming For AT&T Austin Marathon?

While many Houston runners are about as finicky as this weekend's weather projections for the Chevron Houston Marathon, a possible registration surge for the AT&T Austin Marathon wouldn't be entirely out of the question if many runners decide not to race here in Houston on Sunday.

Word is that the Austin Marathon has ordered 6,000 medals for each event - the full and the half marathon - and may need to implement a registration cap should a surge of potential runners put its close to that limit.

Not another "day before" registration for this runner, which netted me a PR?

Jon,
I checked the Austin Marathon site today. They are still sticking to their no cap policy. I can't imagine them changing a long standing policy. Sort of like the Houston Marathon annoucing this morning that the cut-off has been swithced to five hours.

The half and the full in Austin have a soft cap of 6000 each. Today, 1/15, the full has 2800 and the half has 2200. On January 29 the price of the full goes up to $100.00 and the race officials have full confidence that you will be able to get in with no issue at that point. If you have spent the 18 weeks training for a marathon I could not imagine just showing up the day before to run a marathon. You must respect the distance and pay your dues.

The world isn't perfect in that all runners have Monday to Friday jobs and know that they'll have every weekend available. Those people that do are fortunate.

Some people have jobs or projects - in my case - where dates change and slip and require weekend stays (flight attendants and others fall in to this category.)

So you stay in shape enough that you can go and cover the distance, but you know that it may not be able to be your best effort.

So why gamble and throw away $100 when a schedule throws a date change at you and there's nothing you can do about it, or wait, roll the dice and pay $20 extra for the convenience.

And the way that the sport is growing, if you're willing to do a little travelling, you can find a marathon to run at about any time.
