Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Monday Night Duathlon Gym Workout

After taking Sunday off due to my legs hurting me a bit from Saturday's 9-hour round trip drive to and from Flagstaff and running a difficult half marathon plus some torturous delays on the flight home from Albuquerque, it was off to Bally's in The Woodlands this evening to jump start the week.

I started on the "Life Fitness" treadmill and went 35 minutes. Started at 5.0 mph and upped it .1 mph every three (3) minutes. At 12 minutes, I increased the incline to 0.5% and nine (9) minutes later, I upped it to 1.0% and finished at 5.9 mph.

I then went to the stationery bike, set it on random, level 8 and pedalled hard for 30 minutes (looking for the elliptical trainer to get free).

After changing T-shirts (from my Bearathon to Huntsville Half Marathon shirt), I got back on the treadmill for 20 minutes, no incline, starting at 5.5 mph and upping it .1 mph every 5 minutes to round out the workout.

Total workout time: 85 minutes

Jon I have at least 3 commitments to run with you in two weeks at the Woodlands. One of our newer members at North Park, Ray Basinger, Nathan Shahan and myself.

Ray runs almost daily but Nathan and I are committed to getting off the couch.

That's great! We should have a great turnout overall as a lot of the area bloggers from the greater Houston area will be out and Waverly will be running her first 5K without a pacer - in preparation for the Bearkat Bash 5K two weeks later!

Jon-
I know you aren't a member of 24 hour fitness-but what do you think of those new 'walking treadmills' (I think it's called the Natilus)...i believe it's suppose to stimulate running without letting your feet leave the ground. Kind of like a treadmill that moves up and down with your steps. I have tried it and although it's hard/tiring, i don't think it all works the same muscles as running.
