Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

A Logo and a Link for the RRCA

A logo and link isn't everything; however, it is the basic way to show support.

(And I don't have logos, but I do have links where they need to be.)

I must admit that I've learned an immense amount about the running community locally, across the state and nationally over the last two-plus years, including the RRCA (Road Runners Club of America). Therefore, in part of my information-gathering effort to prepare for the full launch of the 2006 National Convention web site, I decided to audit the websites of all of the Texas clubs listed on the RRCA web site.

There were 30 clubs listed and here was the breakdown of whether or not there was an RRCA logo and link displayed on the club's main page (which is the primary requirement of the club's website annual competition):

No internet presence at all: 2
(Sites that needed to have their URL address added or updated): 4
Logo and Link on the front page: 8
Logo on the front page, but no link on the site anywhere: 1
No logo on the front page, but a link elsewhere: 7 (HARRA has its own RRCA section)
No logo or link anywhere on the site: 12

Now here is the club-by-club breakdown:

No internet presence at all - Lone Star Pacesetters (Harlingen), Pineywood Pacers Running Club (Lufkin)
(Sites that needed to have their URL address added or updated): Abilene Runners Club, New Braunfels Running Club, Round Rock Road Runners, Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers
Logo and Link on the front page: Carrollton Runners Club, Flower Mound Striders, Fort Worth Runners Club, Al Lawrence Running Club, West Texas Running Club, San Angelo Road Lizards, Team Texarkana USA, Lake Grapevine Runners and Walkers
Logo on the front page, but no link on the site anywhere: Bay Area Running Club
No logo on the front page, but a link elsewhere: HARRA, Abilene Runners Club, Corpus Christi Roadrunners, Bayou City Road Runners, San Antonio Roadrunners, The Colony Roadrunners, Seven Hills Running Club
No logo or link anywhere on the site: Sea Rim Striders, Cross Country Club of Dallas, Clear Lake Fitness Club, Houston Masters Sports Association, Houston Striders, Kenyan Way, Runner's High Club, Terlingua Track Club, North Texas Trail Runners, New Braunfels Running Club, Plano Pacers, Round Rock Roadrunners

Jon,

Delighted if you want to update the links for the clubs you found. It's basically open - you can email for a userid and password, and it comes back immediately.

I've been bugging Lee for years to put RRCA, HARRA and the HARRA safety message on the Striders web site. PIM link, SMART yahoo group, etc. would be nice. These things take time...

Cheers, Steve
