Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Houston Running Bloggers Update

Just brainstorming here (and not knowing who was serious or not on what item) .....

Next Event: I think there was a general consensus of doing the Run The Woodlands 5K on a quarterly basis and that the next "Bloggers 5K" would be Saturday, December 10th at 8:00 a.m. (An alternative would be to do the Jingle Bell Run 5M (not timed) on Sunday afternoon, December 11th at 3:00 p.m.) We have the possibility to lose one or two of us on either choice, depending on everyone's future running goals and training programs. Sunmart 50K/50M is in Huntsville on Saturday and the 30K in Sugar Land is on Sunday.

(Regardless, we need to get Joe Breda, Steve Bezner and others into the fold on this event.)

T-Shirts: Sarah mentioned the possibility of these originally in a comment on Lisa's blog and it came up again when she, Edwin, Holden and me were standing around at the end of Sunday's USA Space City 10 Miler. I personally think it would be great! Now the question: T-shirt or running shirt? Logo or just words? Colors?

My vote would be running shirt (not a singlet and over the shoulder), logo with words and either green and white -or- the colors that the Fired Up 5K uses (dark blue, red and gold). And if it's a running shirt, I'd probably wear it to race in all the time!

Tent: This was mentioned real light-heartedly! I checked, however, Phil Murray's texastrack.com site. He's a track and field equipment supplier. These aren't cheap!

That's all for the moment! Hope everyone is having a great day!

opps, deleted my first comment!

race:
I will be at the 12-10 RTW race. however, just throwing it out there, The Houston Strider’s Race of the Quarter, the Stepping Stones 5k/10k, will be Dec 4, which might not conflict with other races as much. I don’t know many details about this race yet (as it is new) but look to hear more soon.
Shirts:
I am open to anything, I think a race material as opposed to t-shirt would be perfect. As long as it’s cheap, I am not too picky.
Tent:
I missed this conversation, but we can always pick up a $50 car-shade-deal from WalMart. (and hope it doesn’t blow away!);)

I vote for run the woodlands or any race that does not interfere with a "Marathon Warm-Up Series" race as I've already registered for all of them.

I like the idea of some type of Bloggers shirt. I agree with Jon on a running shirt. I don't feel strongly about colors, but I would definitely wear it to race. Perhaps the shirt could point to a url that contained a blogroll with our blogs, or simply to Jon's blogroll!

Thanks for getting it going Jon!! I'm on board.

I'm up for whatever kind of shirt Sarah designs for us. A running shirt would be great. Are we gonna have a bloggers' slogan or something? Like "I may not run faster than you, but I can blog faster than you."

I can creep around any 5K so RTW or JB Run is fine with me. Since Lisa's emceeing the JB Run, maybe we should do that one and get some publicity from the mic.

I'm all in with the running shirt.

Definietly need to be Steve and Joe in on the race. Looking forward to meeting you guys and a couple of others I haven't met in person yet.

I have a couple ideas for a logo -- I'll try to sketch 'em up this weekend and show you guys! A technical running shirt would be perfect.

I vote for a running shirt that I can wear to races.

I'd rather do the RTW race on 12/10 as it is closer but that is just my selfish reasons.

Race- I vote for the $1 RTW. I'll be there hopefully w/ Manny in tow.

Shirt- Yes, definitely!!!!! Awesome! We need a logo and lettering (Sarah- that's all you!). Definitely needs to be a technical running shirt. I would wear it at every race! As for colors, I am partial to orange of course. yay orange! Plus John, you know I chase you best when you wear orange!

Gee, is that me being called out to run? I'll definately be missing the Jingbell run. Well, I won't be missing it, I just won't be there.
I can swing the RTW on the 10th, though. It'll be neat to meet you folks.

I'm heading to Luke's this afternoon up in The Woodlands. Let me talk to Mike and see what I can pull off.

You know, we can do both - RTW and the Jingle Bell Run. RTW for competitive fun and Jingle Bell Run for the Christmas spirit.

Cassie, the Orange does it for Jessica too. Actually, I think it is anybody that I go out faster than -- it fires them up to beat me. (Which is OK. I like to be an inspiration in all kinds of ways!)

I think we can get a domain name that points to one page and *that* could contain all of our blogs on it.

And I love Edwin's line! That's definitely me!

Of course, as an Aggie, burnt orange motivates me to run faster and pass others wearing the orange as well!

Go Ags!

Orange is way cool! All I'll need is a navy blue short and I'll have the colors of the Fighting Illini! Hail to the Orange, hail to the Blue. . . (Go ILLINI!!!)
