Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Busy 3 October Weekends in Houston

I received an e-mail on Monday from Seven Hills Running Club president and Huntsville Half Marathon race director Ken Johnson that "Sam Houston State University said that we could not use the Health & Kinesiology Center on October 14, 2006 due to Homecoming Activities that weekend. Therefore, I moved the Huntsville Half to Saturday, October 21. "

After checking with race directors Paul Stone and Jay Lee and combining the knowledge that 1.) Luke's Locker in The Woodlands is planning on reviving the "Ten For Texas" 10-Miler and 2.) the Houston Striders previously announced in their February club meeting that they are changing the traditional 20K to a half marathon, here is a busy mid-to-late October race calendar:

Saturday, October 14 - Ten For Texas 10-Miler in The Woodlands
Sunday, October 15 - United Space Alliance 10-Miler in Clear Lake
Saturday, October 21 - Huntsville Half Marathon
Saturday, October 28 - Rocky Raccoon 25K/50K in Huntsville
Sunday, October 29 - Koala's/Luke's Locker Half Marathon in Houston

It would be a heckuva challenge for somebody to run them all!

Excellent news about Ten Miles for Texas. At one time this was my favorite race.

5 races, for a total of 61.7 miles, in 15 days? Someone ought to print up a t-shirt for anyone who does them all... :)

It's a shame they couldn't put one of those 10 milers in the early spring sometime. I know the race calendar is crowded, but it would be nice to have one 3 or 4 weeks after the marathon. It could replace the 15K that the BCRR used to hold out in Tomball--that was always a fun race.

Erin,

Not knowing what the Ten for Texas course would be like, you would have flat (Space City), hilly (Huntsville Half), trails (Rocky Raccoon) and a multiple loop course (Koala's).

Houston's October All-Terrain Challenge?

I agree with you on the 10-Miler in the Spring. Not sure that you could get all of the parties to work together to get it done though. And that's a shame.

Austin kicks Houston in the rear end with the Austin Distance Challenge in the fall.

Is that a dare? Is there a belt buckle involved?

After a projected 150 days of high heat and two more hurricane scares, I can already feel the first cool breath of the fall racing season. Bring it on.

Wow! Let's run them all! That back to back ten miler is going to be a little tough if the weather stays hot and muggy. That and it's going to break the bank.

Don't forget the Nike South HS CC event Oct 7. ( the reason the Ten for Texas was moved to the 14th)

Adjust the start of the RTW event earlier and you can run The Ten for Texas/RTW Half Marathon.

October will be fun.....

Joe,

Just getting you off the bike and out to run is a dare in and of itself. :)

But you have my respect ALWAYS for coming out and gutting it up for the 30K and the Marathon.

If there was a sponsor out there that would be interested in putting together a medal for somebody to do all 5, I'd market it.

i really enjoy the 10 mile distance...two bad that the one that will count for HARRA standings is the day after the Woodlands one....otherwise i might try both!!!!
