Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Resurrection Run 5K on Saturday Morning

I'll be at the 11th annual Resurrection Run 5K on Saturday morning which is held at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Houston (Clear Lake). Yes, I've made it back to Texas after two weeks in British Columbia!

After landing at Intercontinental Airport, getting something to eat at Jason's Deli with Gena and Waverly and buying a new pair of Brooks Beast at Luke's Locker in The Woodlands, I went to Bally's and got in an hour on the elliptical machine (5.26 miles, level 16, with the sticks) and 42 minutes on the bike (24 mins, level 7 and 18 mins, level 9, both hill profiles.)

Then when I got back, Waverly and I went out at 9:25 p.m. and put in 2.1 miles in the subdivision in 25:25.67. We weren't really even pushing it too much. She had brisk walked three times last week and twice this week with Gena, but this is the first that she has run since the Blue Bell Fun Run 5K. She was going to do Run The Woodlands 5K last Saturday, but her leg had been bothering her.

It really made it worth being home. She helps me and I help her. I told her when we where running that I wouldn't be surprised -- if she still found it fun and challenging -- that she could be kicking my butt before too long.

It was evident that she hadn't run in awhile as she had to stop and walk a couple of times because of a side stitch. And we weren't trying to blow it all out. But the interesting thing is that the time was slightly better than on Sunday, March 13th when she did it in 25:26.70 - a 12:07/mile (37:34 5K).

I really enjoyed the run. It is fun to watch her grow up. I let her know this evening - at Jason's Deli - that it looks like I will be able to be in the weekend of the 6th and 7th of May to be able to go to Fort Worth with her as she competes in state PSIA academic competition -- which means (and which is completely OK) that I'll be bypassing the Vancouver International Marathon.
