Space Station Start to Resurrection Run 5K
When have you ever been to a race and had the chance, before the race's start, to listen to a conversation with an astronaut currently in space?
Kudos to Jay Lee, the Resurrection Run 5K race director, co-owner of On The Run and Flight Launch Manager of future Flight 13A that will add pieces to the International Space Station (ISS)!
With the assistance of one of the local radio clubs, Jay carried on about a five-minute conversation via HAM radio with astronaut and Flight Engineer Jeff Williams, who had just boarded the International Space Station less than two (2) weeks ago with Russian Commander Panel Vinogradov. (The ISS was making a pass over the southern part of the United States at approximately 7:35 a.m.)
Williams, a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church that was hosting Saturday's event, talked about having been "a runner all of his life" and that he had exercised earlier in the day running about 2 miles and lifting some weights and that he hoped to be up to a 10K by the time he left the Space Station in approximately six (6) months.
According to material on NASA's web site, Williams, an Army colonel, flew on STS-2001 in May 2000 and made a visit to the Station where he did one spacewalk during that flight. NASA reports that Williams will do two spacewalks during the current 6-month stay -- one each in an American and Russian spacesuit. An excellent article on Williams appears here on the World Magazine's website.
Back on Earth, John Hedengren continued his winning 2006 ways with a 43-second win (15:27.6) over Channelview's Junior Mitchell. Seabrook's Kira Abercromby, stopping the clock in 18:44.6, won the women's event for the second year in a row.
I had a chance to visit with Jay, Karen Thibodeaux and three (3) Houston Running Bloggers -- Joe Carey, Edwin Quarles and Sarah Graybeal.
Finishing 4th in his age group by just 12 seconds, Quarles notched a time of 20:21.1 as he bears down again on breaking 20 minutes. Carey, in training for the Boulder Bolder 10K, finished in the top 25% of all finishers and 6th in his 50-54 age group with a time of 23:09.8.
It was Sarah's fourth year to run the Resurrection Run 5K and this was her 2nd best effort. Two years ago, in the midst of heavy training, she almost opened the 30-minute envelope with a time of 30:04. However, today's effort -- which officially didn't record a chip time against a gun time of 32:06.5 -- netted Sarah a time of 31:41! She took off 1:48 of her 2005 effort of 33:29!
Me? I posted a chip time of 29:33.2 (on a gun time of 29:59.1).
It is about 16 seconds off of my effort from last Saturday in Vancouver. I could chalk it up to the 20 degrees temperature difference, but I can't - as I just wasn't as ready as I was for that event.
Mile 1 -- 8:49.95
Mile 2 -- 9:54.51
Mile 3 -- 9:47.28
Last .1 -- 1:03.86
Overall -- 29:36.6
Nothing new here. Started out like a banshee and paid for it in mile 2. I kept thinking about Sam Rodriguez's post from the Trolley Run 5K about letting it all hang out in mile one and then hanging on the next two. (Sam has the talent to be able to do that. Me? That's another story for another day - in the future.)
I also got a chance to see Christopher Bittinger (who was 6th overall in 17:40.3) and his family as well as Vera Balic and meeting her husband Chris and his son, Ethan. Vera is in taper mode right now for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon to be held two Sundays from tomorrow.
To the gym later and another 2.1-mile run with Ms. Waverly this evening!
