Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Larkin, Jones to top 100 finishes in Broad Street Run

Fellow blogger Duncan Larkin, 34, of Exton, Pennsylvania finished 45th overall this morning in the annual Broad Street Run i10 Miler in Philadelphia. Larkin, who was the runnerup earlier this year at the Napa Valley Marathon in early March and is training for the Vermont City Marathon, covered the distance in 53:59.

One of the individuals that was an inspiration for me to begin running (after he came down to Houston and finished 20th in the 2001 Houston Marathon) is West Chester, Pennsylvania's Rob Jones. "Jonesy", 37, finished 92nd today in a time of 56:52.

"We got lucky beautiful weather, so most times were fast," Jones said.

His wife, Lysa, 42, covered the 10-mile course in 1:29:44. The duo both ran Boston three weeks ago.

"Lysa and I are both just starting to feel recovered after Boston," he added before commenting on his most recent Boston effort. "Actually, I’ve lost about 10 pounds and have started feeling better on a lot of my runs.

"I had a great Boston Marathon for over 24 miles, and was < 1.5 miles away from something in the low 2:40’s when my hamstring cramped forcing me to stop & walk.

"While I ended up running 2:50, I know sub 2:40 is very realistic based on how I felt until my muscles quit on me."

Next up for Jones is October's Chicago Marathon. Jones' marathon history since 2000, courtesy of marathonguide.com, is as follows:

January 2001 - Houston Marathon, 2:51:21 (17th overall)
October 2002 - Steamtown Marathon, 2:57:27 (33rd overall)
October 2003 - Chesapeake Bay Bridge Marathon, 2:50:12 (7th overall)
April 2004 - Boston Marathon, 3:44:16
June 2004 - Grandma's Marathon, 2:50:29 (75th overall)
November 2004 - Philadelphia Marathon, 2:43:36 (45th overall)
April 2006 - Boston Marathon, 2:50:05 (421st overall) - Age 37

Jones, the co-founder of Chester County Running Store in West Chester, Pennsylvania, was clipped by his former partner, Kevin Kelly, who finished 82nd in 56:31 and Kelly's current partner, Scott Purcell, who finished 54th in 54:32.

Six (6) Texans ran the event.

They are as follows: Mari McCain, Katy, F, 31, 1:14:24; Gilbert Morong, Trophy Club, M, 57, 1:15:31; David McNamara, Spring, M, 44, 1:16:56; John Wilson, Dallas, M, 23, 1:18:48; Ed Meyertholen, Austin, M, 51, 1:19:42 and Steven Cronan, Houston, M, 48, 1:34:47.
