Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

More Late Night Miles in Vancouver

Well, I took the collar two days - Tuesday and Wednesday - but it wasn't because of malaise or any other self-inflicted malady. I'm beginning to deal with shin splints on my right leg so I decided to rest it. (At times, getting a sock on without a lot of pain was difficult and walking Tuesday morning to the SeaBus was a testy proposition.)

However, after work, calling home and getting a few things done here at the apartment in Vancouver, I headed out at a little after 11 a.m. for a late night run.

It actually went good for the most part. I ended up running for 1:06:22.71, which included a stop or two in the first half mile for stop lights and walking down the stairs near GM Place past mile 4. I think where I hit my watch was a little off on the last two splits (below) because I didn't feel like I was running a 9:13/pace ever.

1.829 miles - 17:50.42 - 9:45 pace
0.797 miles - 8:00.29 - 10:03 pace (2.626 total) ... these are on the money.
1.661 miles - 15:18.08 -9:13/pace (4.287 total)
2.030 miles - 25:13.92 - 12:26/pace (6.317 total)

1:06:22.71 - 6.317 miles - 10:30/pace
(Yikes, that's a 1:05:07 10K. I can do better than that!)

That makes 22.6 miles so far this week. Add the 6.2 on Saturday morning during the Mayfest 10K in Fort Worth and that'll give me 28.8 overall. Not too bad, although it easily could have been in the 35-37 range if my leg wouldn't have been hurting me a little bit.

However, that'll give me a goal of 31.6 for next Sunday through Saturday (and all of that will be in the heat of Houston!) I need to get to where I'm doing between 32 and 40 a week consistently. Once I get into that range consistently, I think I can start shedding a pound or two here and there.

Friday is a travel day for me. From Vancouver to Houston (landing at 2:45 p.m. Central) and then driving to Fort Worth that afternoon and early evening as Waverly competes academically in three (3) events in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) Class AA state championships. (I'm so proud of her, regardless of how she does, that I can't stand it!)
