Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Sunday Night in Vancouver: Off The Schnide

Jon Walk's 7-game hitting streak has been ... oops, this is running. Not baseball.

Do over! This is cyberspace. We can do anything we want, right? How about this?

Jon Walk's 7-day runless streak after the Fiesta de Albuquerque Marathon was snapped Sunday evening when the 39-year-old barely kept it from getting to eight just an hour and a half before the end of the day by logging a run of 1:43:43 into early Monday morning.

Walk said the run, which included running half way around Stanley Park (to Lions Gate Bridge from the west) before having to turn back around because the seawall was closed at that point, was one of the more relaxing and refreshing runs he's done in quite some time.

"I'm not one that bonds with nature or the environment too much," said Walk. "But English Bay (which heads out into the Strait of Georgia) was very calm and the lights of West Vancouver and the Lions Gate Bridge made a good bit of the run very relaxing and peaceful.

"I've been told it's not wise to run in Stanley Park at night. However, I didn't feel that unsafe during any part of the run there.

"I wanted to just run for time this evening and not worry about the miles. I had been down most of the week and especially over the weekend despite being here in a beautiful part of the world where the weather is still great for running.

"It's tough being gone from home and people I think don't realize how much it tends to sap some of the mental energy necessary; however, this was a much needed run to push me on to where I need to be."

Because of the curvatures around Stanley Park, measuring the distance he said would be a "crap shoot" at best. Estimating a pace between 10:45 and 11 minutes per mile, which included inclines in the last mile to finish off the run, Walk said that he'll count this one as 9.5 miles.

Good enough, he said, to get back in the game despite still having some tenderness over the major muscle that runs down the front of the right foot from the lower leg.

Brooks Beast (B7, not a model just the 7th pair) mileage: 38.9 miles.

(Run notes: From Hornby and Howe, down Hornby to Beach, Beach east to the bridge, turnaround, take Beach all the way to Stanley Park and around, along the seawall, to just past Lions Gate Bridge. Returned back to Beach and Denman, took a left going north to West Georgia, right to Thurlow, left on Alberni and right on Burrard back to Howe.)
