Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Monday Night: More Miles in Vancouver

I was tired Monday night; however, I knew that I needed to get out and get something in - or I was never going to get out of this funk. I told a former co-worker once that the toughest thing I had found was getting your shoes on and out the door.

I had sketched out a tentative plan to run each night through Thursday, take off Friday (long travel day - Vancouver to Houston to Fort Worth), do a 10K Saturday morning, and run long late, late Sunday night when I got back to Vancouver.

It is just that last night, I ran a little longer than what my plan had on it.
When I start getting able to be consistent about putting a plan down and sticking to it, I'll start posting it here. (Please. Nobody hold your breath. I hate to lose readers.) I really admire Barbara Boone's ability to do that in her blog. I think she is the one individual that I've seen every week actually have a plan and then primarily stick with it.

According to the map that I checked online today, I did 6.834 miles in 1:12.11.53 - a 10:34 per mile pace, which included 160 feet of hillwork up about 12 blocks of Vancouver. (The map on HARRA's web site can be found here.) After I got to the intersection of Quebec and Broadway, which included about eight (8) of those 12 blocks and was 29 minutes into the run, I went out another 7 minutes before turning it back around.)

My run took me by both of Vancouver's major sports facilities -- BC Place Stadium (where the BC Lions play CFL football and what will be the stadium of the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics) and General Motors Place (where the Vancouver Canucks play).

However, in one of the parking lots for the two facilities, there were rows of trailer trucks as well as a tent with all of these people dressed in gray garb with paint on their faces. Knowing that West Vancouver is often noted as "Hollywood North," I surmised that they were getting ready to do some night-time filming of a movie, etc.

Sunday - 9.5 miles
Monday - 6.8 miles

I'm a little bit fearful that I may have developed a case of shin splints (in the front of my right leg) after the Fiesta de Albuquerque Marathon. It doesn't necessarily hurt when I run, although it does help me concentrate and focus on getting my stride right, but it does cause some pain hours afterwards.

I need to get out tonight (on Tuesday) and try to keep it light (i.e. no more than 5 miles).
