Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

5-Mile Splits at Ten For Texas / USA 10-Miler

At Saturday's Ten For Texas, many, many runners - including Holden and Dave -- felt as if mile 3 was long and mile 10 was short.

This stat might confirm something was amiss -- 626 of the 758 finishers had negative splits in the last five (5) miles.

During today's United Space Alliance 10-Miler, 380 runners ran a negative split while 442 ran a positive split.

What's one ingredient of a successful racer? Consistency.

Of the 100 top finishers, 37 had a negative split. 63 had a positive and one runner didn't hit the 5-mile mat. However, the key stat is that 83 of the 99 runners (83.8%) had a variation in splits of less than a minute and 45 seconds.

Of all remaining finishers, just 334 of 724 (46.1%) were able to keep their splits in the same range.

(1:45 wasn't any magical or scientific number. I could have picked any number -and- the percentages probably would have been about the same.)

Are you telling me that my 6:07 in the tenth mile was a mirage?? I was resting up for it during mile three. Oh well, it felt good on paper for a day!

Vince,

It wasn't rose colored glasses that you were looking through on that time ... but rather JoePa's thick ones!

Hopefully, they won't lose another one the rest of the way.

Good seeing you at 10 for Texas. I'd like to be able to run with more split consistency, but the negative splitting seems to suit me pretty well and allows these old legs to warm up for the latter stages.

You mean I DIDN'T run a sub-10 minute last mile, when I've only mananged to do one of those once in my life? Boo hoo hoo.

Oh, well, guess I'll have to hug tighter onto my 6 and a half minute negative split.
