Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Local Invited Runner Spots from Today's Space City 10-Miler

Please note that this information is completely unofficial until released and announced by the Elite Athlete Committee of the 2007 Chevron Houston Marathon. (I have an e-mail in requesting the official information as soon as it becomes available.)

As you read in the October edition of HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running, the following runners earned spot from last year's 2006 Houston Marathon:

Male
Drew Prisner (Open)
Bernie Weber (40-49)
Steve Brammer (50-59)
Kenneth Ruane (60-69)
Jim Braden (70-over)
Female
Diana Hirst (Open)
Christie Lammers (40-49)
Carole Uttecht (50-59)
Nancy Prejean (60-69)

Based on information contained on the Local Invited Runner Standards page of the 2007 Houston Marathon's web site, the following runners have potentially earned local invited runner spots:

Male
Cole Dailey (Open, 51:08.2, best time under 58:46)
Terry Garrett (M40, 57:33.9, best time under 1:00:28)
Rich Siemens (M60, 1:10:03.5, best time under 1:11:02)
Female
Susan Walters (F40, 1:06:38.3, best time under 1:10:15)
Donna Sterns (F50, 1:13:52.1, best time under 1:16:33)

All but Dailey are HARRA members, according to the 9/18/06 update on the organization's web site.

For the men's 50-59 division, the standard was 1:05:09 and the closest runner was the Houston Striders' Ted Traynor, who ran 1:06:53.3 today.

For the women's 60-69 and 70+ divisions, there were finishers; however, none of the finishers were significantly close to the standars.

In the women's open division, only four (4) runners met the time standard of 1:07:39. They were Jody Hawkins (1:01:05.4), Sarah Yoder (1:04:51.5), Susan Walters (1:06:38.3) and Olya Perevalova (1:07:33). However, I understand from my sources that Hawkins and Walters - both over 40 - would not qualify in the Open Division.

Since the results don't list the city and state of the runner, it is hard to officially tell where Yoder and Perevalova are from. Yoder ran track and cross country for Rice University, but calls Helotes, Texas home (from the Rice University athletic web site). The only reference on the Internet to Perevalova is a third place finish at the 2003 Pacific Crest Marathon and she is listed then as being from Nashville, Tennessee.
