Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Final Local Invited Runner Spots Snared at 30K Today

The final local invited runners spots for the 2007 Chevron Houston Marathon were up for grabs today at the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital 30K and Brett Riley, Todd Gilbreath, Lisa Tilton-McCarthy and Anita Werner punched their ticket to the sold out event.

Posting the best winning time since Gannon White's 2002 performance of 1:41:41, 35-year-old Houstonian Brett Riley won his second 30K in three years with a time of 1:44:49.8 today. This bettered the qualifying standard of 1:54:48.

Sugar Land's Jon Butler garnered his third Warm-Up Series win with the best Masters time of 1:48:51.9; however, Butler earned his slot three weeks ago in the HMSA Classical 25K. Therefore, 41-year-old Todd Gilbreath beat Steven King and Gerardo Mora to win the 40-49 qualifying spot with a time of 1:49:59.9 -- better than the 1:57:16 standard.

On the men's side, nobody met the 50-59 standard while Orange's Kenneth Ruane and The Woodlands' Jim Braden both met their respective age groups' standard. However, the duo had previously qualified in other events.

With 26-year-old Galveston triathlete Autumn Ray having earned her invited runner spot back in October during the Koala/Luke's Houston Half Marathon, it allowed 39-year-old Lisa Tilton-McCarthy to have the best qualifying time in the Open division today with a 2:08:48 showing. The standard is 2:11:19.

Katy's Anita Werner also benefitted the same way.

The women's overall and Masters winners today -- Heidy Lozano and Susan Walters -- both met the 40-49 qualifying standard; however, they had won their spots in earlier events.

This opened the door for the 41-year-old Werner to still qualify. She finished in 2:14:48 - just 37 seconds better than the 2:15:25 qualifying standard.

Donna Sterns of Sugar Land met the 50-59 qualifying standard but qualified at the United Space Alliance 10-Miler. The Woodlands' Nora Wilson was just over three minutes away from meeting the 2:27:31 requirement with a 2:30:40 showing.
