Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Random Thursday Notes / Thoughts

1.) The Willis Wildkat 5K for Saturday morning, December 16th, now enjoys online registration at this link. (I'll probably be running it and then heading off right away to go see Waverly play basketball.)

2.) Nice online coverage from the Dallas Morning News concerning the upcoming White Rock Marathon on Sunday. Especially this section titled, "How To Become A Rock Star".

3.) Sunmart (Saturday) -- 52 degrees high, 45 degrees low. 10% chance of precipitation. Mostly cloudy. Highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid 40s.

3a.) Methodist Sugar Land Hospital 30K (Sunday) -- 70 and 58. 40% chance of rain. Showers. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s.

3b.) Jingle Bell Run 5 Miler (Sunday) -- 70 and 59. 40% chance of rain. Chance of showers. Highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 50s.

3c.) Dallas White Rock Marathon (Sunday) -- 62 and 55. 30% chance of rain. Occasional showers possible. Highs in the low 60s and lows in the mid 50s.

4.) One report about the Fiesta Marathon last Sunday in the Valley: "Hidalgo was a boring out and back race. The first aid station was at 3.5 miles and they only had water on the course. It's a good thing that the weather was cool and cloudy."

5.) Can't wait to see how The Woodlands' Michael Kove (and RRCA-certified coach) does on Sunday in the Las Vegas International Marathon. It will be his first one. At age 68.

6.) Big marathon weekend around the USA. 8 marathons.

7.) Top Masters female at the St. Jude Memphis Marathon last Saturday? 45-year-old Russian Alevtina Naumova in 2:43:59. Does the name sound familiar? She was the overall female winner of the 1994 Houston Marathon.

7a.) Same race. 3 places later? 2001 overall winner of the Houston Marathon, Christopher Ciamarra, who has now relocated to Alpharetta, Georgia, was 22nd overall finishing in 2:46:26.
