Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Notes from December 2-3 Weekend

+ Congratulations go out to Houston's 47-year-old Suzy Seeley, who won the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon for the 3rd time in her career last Saturday in a time of 3:27:58.

Seeley held off 52-year-old Rapid City, SD lawyer Amy Yanni, who finished less than two minutes behind in 3:29:34. It was Yanni's 34th marathon this year and her 17th top three finish. All but two were under 4 hours.

It was Seeley's 9th marathon of the year and her second win. The other was this March in the Seabrook Lucky Trails Marathon, which she won in 3:36:57.

+ 40-year-old Houstonian Sean Wade once again this December went to Barbados.

Last year, Wade ran the 10K, which is run the day before the Barbados Marathon and Half Marathon, and finished second.

1. Joseph Kamau 31:00 SM30-39 1/43 1 3:06 KENYA
2. Sean Wade 31:04 SM30-39 2/43 2 3:07 USA
3. Zepherinus Joseph 31:08 SM30-39 3/43 3 3:07 ST.LUCIA

This year, Wade would once again see St. Lucia's Zeperinus Joseph in this year's Half Marathon. But unfortunately for Wade, Joseph was in front of him and won the half marathon.

1. Zepherinus Joseph (St Lucia) - 1 hour, 08.15 minutes
2. Richard Kemeli (Kenya) - 1:09.21
3. Sean Wade (USA) - 1:09.36

The one set of results stated that "Kemeli" was from Canada. However, I believe that this is the same Richard Kimeli who won the United Space Alliance 10-Miler in mid-October in Clear Lake. (Kimeli also ran a time of 1:06:28 and finished 4th in the America's Finest City Half Marathon in San Diego on August 20th.)

(Both of these items were brought to my attention by Mr. Eagle Eye himself, Edwin Quarles. You'd think he was a sportswriter at some point in his life ... )
