Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Thursday Evening 6.39 Miles in Vancouver

I had wanted to get up Thursday morning and crank out another 10 miles, but my legs were a little banged up from Wednesday morning's effort. So after a long day of work, I got out on the streets at about 8:30 p.m. Pacific time.

I went pretty much the same route that I did Wednesday morning, but I made my turnaround shorter -- specifically at the top of a hill on Victoria and Adanec Street.

Out: 3.12 miles - climbed 262 feet - 33:36.98 - 10:46/mile
Back: 3.27 miles - 37:06.62 - 11:20/mile (11:10/mile)

Total: 6.39 miles - climbed 525 feet - 1:10:43 - 11:04/mile (10:58/mile)
(less 34-35 seconds when I took a quick break before turning back around and my watch didn't stop)

I didn't think that I was going that much faster than what I had yesterday morning. My legs felt a little fatigued and it had started to rain about 15 minutes into the run.

I could feel myself slowing down, especially as I passed the mile 5 mark (looking back on the course that I mapped.) My body started to hurt more than anything else. As far as cardio-wise, I was perfectly fine and relaxed, not rushed at all with this pace.

I came back in again on Hastings Street into the Central Business District and part of that goes through what is known as the lower Eastside, which is a tough part of the city. Lot of yelling and none of it I stopped to look or acknowledge ... I just kept running. And with that, nobody among the street people, drunks and homeless bothered me.

But it does make you thankful for what you have and the abilities that we've been given.

Any idea what's going on with the RTW links? rusa.com/rtw is dead. And no results last few races.

Also, is the 1st January RTW race on the 6th or 13th? I would understand moving it to the 6th because of the Marathon, but some online sources have it on both dates.

L's L website is nonindicative. (Withholding comment of my nonsurprise and their general ineptitude)

Will see you in 2007. I'll be back baby. Mwa-ha-ha-ha.
