Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Thursday Night Treadmill

I had to be in our office in the Galleria until about 8 p.m. (to take an Introduction to SQL course); however, I still made it home to change clothes and then make it to Bally's before 9 p.m.
I logged 55 minutes on the treadmill. Started at my normal 4.3 mph, took it up .1 mph each ten (10) minutes, and when I got to the 51st minute (sounds like a soccer match), I cranked it to 5.7 mph and started to back down .1 mph every minute.

Uh ... I got through 5.7, 5.6, 5.5 and 5.4 before I ended the last minute at 4.3 mph and called it a night - before I got to an hour. So 55 minutes is in the books for the evening. (Those four minutes felt faster than a 2-minute 400 that I've run.)

I almost threw in the towel at about the 37- or 38-minute mark because I think my food intake was good, but a little low for the day; however, I pushed through and tried to focus on going as long as I could. (It didn't hurt that this month was the Health & Fitness magazine Swimsuit issue. But I was moving my arms so fast that I couldn't turn the pages so I just kept focus on the cover until I finished.)

Plus I knew Bill was at the Twin Creeks Middle School track as he called and left a voice mail message, but he must have been through already because he wasn't breathing that hard. (Just making sure I'm ready to go for San Antonio.)

Sorry Katy, no more interesting tidbits from evesdropping at the gym. (But I really wasn't. They weren't hiding it and while it wasn't real loud, neither looked my way ... so I kept on watching the good show.)

A side benefit of the day was that I pulled out an old polo shirt that I've had in the dresser for a very long time. Maybe even close to ten years. I don't know. It still had the tag on it! It was one of those fashion labels from awhile back and while it was a XXL, it was cut more like a L or an XL. I've tried it on from time to time, but it snuggled my body like a wetsuit. Today, I put it on and it fit well. I was pleased.

When I've added weight lately, it has seemed to be in the upper body. As I've been trying to work a little bit harder here the last four weeks, it seems to be coming back off from there I guess. Motivation to keep up the pressure.

More tomorrow on why I did Oklahoma City and am doing another marathon now in May.

The way I see it is, if you say it out loud in public it's fair game. I learned all sorts of stuff while getting my hair done yesterday. :)

Just for the record, I feel the need to clarify this - I don't dislike the country music genre entirely. I just can't handle the 'she thinks my tractor's sexy, I wanna check you for ticks, international harvester, honky tonk badonkadonk' varieties. Those all remind me of the lady on the 10 o'clock news with no teeth and her hair in curlers, describing how the tornado scooped up her mobile home and bubba, her 3 legged dog. Some of it's super great though!

Chesney, Paisley, Morgan and Adkins.

I get tired of Chesney. All of his songs sound the same.

Paisley. I like Brad. Cassie doesn't like that song either even though he is a native West Virginian like Ms. Tiggs.

Awww, how can you not like that song from Craig Morgan? Wait, you're one of the ones sitting behind the pa-pa-pa-plower.

I can see the honky tonk badonkadonk song (and you even spelled it right ... darn you're good), but it is as mindless - and suggestive - as any other genre.

If all else fails, just go with George.
