Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Tuesday Night Track / Gym

Bought a couple of pair of Asics Fortitudes that were on sale - being the new Asics line is coming out - for $130. Can't complain about that at all and, of course, "Free" Andrew Perry got the sales credit. While I was there, I got a chance to meet Richard Mac Namee, a new British triathlete that resides in The Woodlands. (He finished 9th overall at Saturday's CB&I Triathlon in The Woodlands.)

I had to try them out so I headed to the track. The effort didn't completely suck, but I could have logged some more miles. However, I got four (4) on the book for the evening.

Mile 1 -- 2:39.94, 2:41.25, 2:42.92, 2:41.67 (10:45.80)
Mile 2 -- 2:42.04, 2:40.98, 2:42.87, 2:39.56 (10:45.45)
Mile 3 -- 2:40.84, 2:37.57, 2:30.81, 2:27.25 (10:15.69)
Mile 4 -- 2:40.31, 2:41.36, 2:38.14, 2:10.97 (10:10.78)

I had a break between the first two miles and the second two miles. And I probably should have gone out for more after I finished the second set, but I didn't.

I brought Waverly here to the house, went to the gym and cranked out an hour on the stationery bike (keeping the pedal rpm over 90 about 95% of the time).

That addition made me feel like the day - from a workout standpoint - was worthwhile.

Always good visiting with Bill Dwyer, Debbie Tripp, George Roffe, Liz Berry (who's thinking of going up to the Polish Pickle Run 5K in Bremond in June), John Laskowski, Gena Alvarez, Misty Baugh and "Mr. I'll Race Anything" Dan Jordan.

The Alvarezs are getting excited about their trip to Florida in approximately two weeks to do their first half Ironman, and Misty was talking about switching to the full marathon for San Antonio. (I told her that her goals would be two-fold: Finish and beat Bill!)

I saw Ron Longtin, Donna Ryals, Scott Mayer, Greg Alvarez, Doug Stiles, Lori Eubanks and talked to a gentleman with a Marines t-shirt on who indicated that he was a commercial diver. (I think he must have been one of Kim's triathletes.)

Good effort, and good company.
