Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Tuesday Morning Treadmill

While Waverly had one of her last physical therapy appointments at 7 a.m. this morning, I went to Bally's to get in a run on the treadmill. I'm really glad that I went because I didn't see how I was going to squeeze it in before I had to leave to head to the airport at 2:45 p.m. today.

So here's the recent activity updated:

Friday, 5/30: 60 minutes -- All at 4.3 mph
Saturday, 5/31: 5K and 60 minutes on the stationary bike
Sunday, 6/1: 60 minutes -- 53 minutes at 4.4 mph, 7 minutes at 4.5 mph
Monday, 6/2: 60 minutes -- 52 minutes at 4.5 mph, 6 minutes at 5.0 mph, 1 each at 5.4 and 6.2 mph
Tuesday, 6/3: 45 minutes -- All at 4.5 mph (Wanted to read the Chronicle while running)

What's exciting is that some running shirts are starting to fit differently. I wore a new shirt to the gym this morning. And the white technical shirt that I bought at the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon is getting close to being able to wear again. That's a good thing!

I've now set a target, as long as I can keep the activity level up and continue to push, to run a 5K without a shirt for Saturday, September 13 (maybe even at Run The Woodlands). I've got a lot of work to be able to do that; however, that seems like a reasonable goal.

I am way too self conscious to run with just a sports bra on. I really want to run without a shirt, but I just can't do it. At least not at home or around people I know. In Japan I did it nearly every day b/c I never saw anyone else let alone anyone I knew! Good on you for setting the goal!!
