Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Bayou City Road Runners (BCRR) Newsletters Online

Even though I'm a member of the Houston Striders, I try not to make exclamations that the "Striders are the best running club in town!" For me, they may be. But for somebody else, they may not.

Do Striders get the majority of the mentions in this blog? Yes, but it isn't by design. It is usually because I have a limited amount of time and they are the closest folks to me. I count people in all of the other clubs close friends as well.

There are nearly 20 HARRA-affiliated running clubs in the greater Houston area and that doesn't include groups on the outside of the area such as the Seven Hills Running Club in Huntsville, the Sea Rim Striders in Beaumont and the Woodlands Track Club up here in the The Woodlands.

A recent honorable mention in the 2004 RRCA awards was the Bayou City Road Runners' newsletter, "The Bird". The club's newsletter page can be accessed here and their August and September newsletters have recently been posted online for your enjoyment.

In the August issue, there is an excellent article from Kim Pilcher and her completing the Western States 100 in just 7 minutes under the 30-hour time limit (pages 4 and 6). This month, Geoffrey Pierce talks about becoming a "Doubler" - doing both the Pikes Peak Marathon and the Pikes Peak Ascent - on consecutive days.

My congratulations to Eddie Rodriguez on page 5 in his discussion of HARRA-related activities, he states: "Congratulations to the Striders for the RRCA to Houston in March. More info on the big event as it approaches."

Why congratulations? Because the Striders are hosting the event? No, not at all. Because, in the same issue (page 2, to be exact), we are treated to the following from BCRR president Joe Sellers: "Houston will be the host city for the 2006 RRCA convention in March, with the Bayou City Classic being the event race for the out of-town guests. As details are made available about the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) convention, I hope that all of our members will take the opportunity to check out the classes and other opportunities that will be available during this national event. The regional and national awards will also be presented at this time. In the past, our own April Murphy has received awards for the club's newsletter. I will provide details of up-coming categories and how to nominate someone for an award. We have several deserving people in our club that have been overlooked for years and should be nominated. The secret is to send in lots of nominations for the person that is being considered for an award, along with a description of why they deserve it. We, as a club, can "stuff the ballot box" as well as the other club in Houston that has been nominating from within."

I have no understanding why there needs to be this kind of public rhetoric among the area running clubs! It benefits absolutely nobody!

For Joe's benefit, and everyone that is an RRCA-affiliated club and who will be attending the RRCA Convention, I have been diligently working to be able to list out all of the organization's awards and past award winners on the National Convention website that I'm very fortunate - and proud - to be involved in.
