Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

Friday's Finer Points!

A.) Although none of us should ever forget, remember that Sunday is September 11th!

1.) The Blog This! Striders HARRA Cross Country Relay team of Holden Choi, Jessica Alexander, Jennifer Kim and I have been officially registered for Saturday afternoon, September 17th's event. (Two things are for certain: We'll have fun and we'll score 2 club points for the Striders in the HARRA Fall Series club competition.)

1a.) If you are a blogger and not racing on a team, come out early (at around 4 p.m.), wear your running clothes and warm up with us before the start of the race!

1b.) Post-race Blogger / Striders / HARRA trash talk on Saturday, September 17th will occur at Texadelphia's, 5535 Memorial Drive, Suite O. Yahoo! map is here.

2.) The fall racing season steps up another notch on Saturday with a number of quality 5K's. The three (3) big ones are the Bearkat Bash 5K/10K, Runway Race for Life 5K (out at IAH), Huntington's Disease Society of America 5K (Lisa Leese will be running this) as well as a new event at North Shore HS called the Hot Tamale Family Fun Run.

3.) Speaking of the budget buster race, HARRA president Tom Stilwell will be make a brief introduction of HARRA to runners pre-race and be handing out HARRA materials afterward at Saturday's Run The Woodlands 5K #137 on Saturday morning. All runners are invited to stay around afterwards for a stretching and injury prevention clinic supported by the Team In Training The Woodlands group.

4.) Monday, September 12th is the Houston Marathon's Party In The Park when they will also reveal who the new title sponsor is.

5.) As I mention HARRA, next Saturday's Cross Country Relay will be the first of the 5-race CitySports Dirt Dogs - Practice for the Tour XC Series. The "Practice for the Tour" Series, spearheaded by one of Houston's running notables, Roger Boak, for years, isn't new. Like the Spring "Tour de Bayou" free series, results will be kept and a Dirt Dogs T-shirt will be awarded to each of the Male/Female Open, Male/Female Masters and Male/Female Juniors race winners. The series winners will receive a yellow lei to signify their status as the points leader before each race. (No word if they must run the next race with the lei around their neck the entire distance! - JW)

More to come over the weekend! If you are racing on Saturday, best wishes to each and every one of you!
