Houston Running

One of the leading sources for the discussion of Houston-area (and Texas as well) road racing. Focus and attention will be given to Houston-area runners, specifically HARRA members, that compete in outside-of-the-area events as well as those who do interesting things that aren't captured in the various media outlets, such as Inside Texas Running, Runner Triathlete News and Roberta MacInnis' Running Notebook in the Houston Chronicle (all fine publications and columns but with limitations too).

Name:
Location: Spring, Texas, United States

I'm a mid-to-the back of the pack runner who probably enjoys promoting runners more than I do running myself ... I've completed 21 marathons (with a 4:47:32 PR! in Austin) and 52 half marathons (with a 2:09:58 PR! in Oregon) since November 2003 ... I've done a marathon in 12 states, half marathon in 23 and an event in 30 states and one Canadian province ... I have a 13-year-old daughter, Waverly Nicole, who completed her first half marathon in January 2006, made only two B's each of the last two years, was the only sixth grader to sing a solo (Carrie Underwood's Don't Forget To Remember Me) in their choir program (adding Taylor Swift's Tim McGraw in '08) and scored a 19 on the ACT in December 2007 as a seventh grader ... Waverly and I are members of the following clubs -- the Seven Hills Running Club, HARRA and The Woodlands Running Club ... I'm Marathon Maniac #308 ... I edit HARRA's Footprints in Inside Texas Running and write a column for Runner Triathlete News called, "Talking the Talk" ... I'm also the running columnist for the Courier of Montgomery County ... I'm a three-time winner of TAPPS' Sportswriter of the Year Award as well as TABC's Golden Hoops Award.

6 2/3 Miles on a Friday Afternoon in Houston?

To those of you who I bent an ear in an e-mail earlier this afternoon, thanks for listening. :)

If you are reading this first and haven't checked your e-mail, well, I guess that means you have something to read now!

Most Fridays, except the next two, I work from home. It is what I love about the consulting job that I have. We travel out on Monday mornings, come home Thursday evenings and work hard in between. But I have some latitude on Fridays as long as I get work done, make meetings or conference calls, etc.

Sam Rodriguez wrote earlier this week in a post about runs that are confidence builders. I think many of us that ran the Space City 10 Miler were a little beat up still and I thought I was getting back on track Tuesday, but the world got on top of me a little bit the last 48 hours.

So this afternoon (yes, in the middle of the day), I headed over to Meyer Park on near the intersection of Cypresswood and Stuebner-Airline. We ran by it this year during the Klein HS Bearkat Bash 5K/10K (twice for that). There are two running/bike paths in the park: one that is a 1.33-mile loop on the north side of Cypresswood and a 1.25-mile loop on the south side.

I've almost always done the loop on the north side. There are markers at 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.25 and 1.33, but today I was just focused on getting some of the rust off and making sure that I ran the entire time. (There's a water fountain or two along the path, but this was a dry run for me.)

I felt good most of the time, particularly when there was a nice breeze. There were some other runners out. Many who were going the opposite direction and by seeing where we intersected, I could tell they were just a little faster than me. But there were one or two that weren't and/or didn't have the same stamina.

I did 5 loops. After the 4th loop, I stopped my watch and was going to walk some. But, I walked back to the start of the 1.33-mile loop, hit my watch twice and got another one in.

Loop 1 -- 14:20.15 -- 10:50/mile
Loop 2 -- 14:57.07 -- 11:14/mile
Loop 3 -- 15:12.35 -- 11:26/mile
Loop 4 -- 14:51.65 -- 11:11/mile
Loop 5 -- 14:25.86 -- 10:51/mile

Total: 1:13:47.08 -- 11:04/mile

The time wasn't fantastic, but it was a confidence builder and got me back on the playing field again!
